What a hackjob

I mean to be fair, as far as hack jobs go, it's fairly 'descrite' if i can use that word in this context. Like someone else said, if you close it up you're not even bothered. Maybe the person got tired of trying to fit the wires around all that wood? Either way sucks, none the less, but could have been way way worse.

I just emailed the owner who was completely unaware of this damage.
He bought it 15 years ago. It's likely the store that sold it to him had no idea about this either.

He has asked me to see if I can patch it up.
I have some pieces of alder I can use. Then I can do a colour match and try and get it looking original again.

You also were not aware of this before buying?

It's super-annoying and I'd be very surprised if a previous owner hadn't looked under the pickguard during the entire time of owner ship.

It would ruin my day. But I think it's an area where a good repair would leave it every bit as structurally sound (the original bodies were probably at least two pieces of wood) and any cosmetic differences would be well hidden.

I don't know, i've owned tons of guitars that i've never taken the pickguard off of. Do you guys take every guitar apart you buy?

I guess now with the vintage guitar boom most people like to get amateur forensic with guitars, but i haven't always been like this.

The thing I find most interesting about this guitar is that someone must have done this, then decided to cover it up and left the stock pickups in. I guess the whole damage doesn't have any real effect on the functionality and sound of the instrument, and as soon as the pickguard is on, it's not visible anymore. Which I find interesting, because the instrument is otherwise in perfect shape and seems to have been treated with respect.

It would be interesting to know what the person who did this wanted to do. It's like a smuggler's work.

I have one just like this and I've never taken anything off it. (Some of you must be screwdriver-happy!)
Maybe I have a drugs-pocket inside mine ... maybe I have your drugs!

Mine is super-transitional as there are screw-holes filled in between/behind the 'F' tuners, where a row of Klusons was going to go. I know the filler is original as it's under the checking.
