strange story of 1980 Jazzmaster neck
Just saw this neck on ebay; never heard about this.
Anyone know of it?

I've never heard of it either but I could see it being true. Fender/CBS does have something of a history of not wasting parts (think Swinger/Musiclander/Maverick, Bullet Fenders allegedly made with old Mustang necks/pickups etc) so if they had a couple hundred Jazzmaster bodies left by 1981-1982 when the model was being phased out and they had some Stratocaster neck blanks either laying around or in production anyway I see no reason why they wouldn't mate the two and move some more guitars.
Hell, aren't the first run of Japanese Jaguars and Jazzmasters meant to have used some US hardware and pickups? No doubt they had the stuff and no desire to waste it.
The 8 in the serial number looks a little bit misplaced though.

It looks legit, but I do find it peculiar that it still is a "traditional" Jazzmaster neck, so with a heel-adjusted trussrod. A Strat-neck of that era had a bullet-trussrod at the headstock (and also because a heel-adjusted is not compatible with the 3-bolt microtilt). So it means it's a pre 1972 Strat neck-blank, or something that was made with at least SOME deliberation.
There is this though, which is allegedly the very last USA Jazzmaster made, in 1982:

I've seen pictures of what was supposedly a '82 Jazzmaster that also had a regular dot neck.

Rosewood is beautiful on the eBay example.
King Buzzo: I love when people come up to me and say “Your guitar sound was better on Stoner Witch, when you used a Les Paul. “...I used a Fender Mustang reissue on that, dumbass!

I remember trying brand new Jazzmaster (very first one I ever played) in a shop in Coventry UK that was identical to the 82 pictured above. This was around ‘85 and the shop told me they had it for over two years. Quality was great. I’m sure it was from left over parts though and not something like the 82/83 Dan Smith Strats where they went back to 4 bolt necks, a small headstock which is slightly wrong, deep contours. Not to be confused with the weirdo 2 knob Strats they did from 83 on. Those Dan Smith Strats were very great. The 82 pictured looks to be higher quality than the last of the blocks/binding JMs at the end of the line.
