Refinishing a 1965 Jazzy

Post by Hyphen Nation » Sat Jun 22, 2019 3:03 pm

So a few years back, I got a good deal on a 1965 Jazzmaster on craigslist. It's a bit of a weirdo, but it plays great. I just couldn't stand the banana yellow custard refinish it had that was supposed to approximate Oly White. I've wanted to refinish it since i got it, even exchanged a few emails with Danocaster, but you know...the actual stripping takes some time and effort, and the guitar played great.

This past winter I saw an instagram post that Puisheen made about a refin he did with Danocaster and it gave me the nudge I needed. I got out my sanding supplies and went to town...for over a week.... Below are a few pics of the journey.

Here's how it looked when I got it:

Shifting to phone pics, so these aren't quite as high quality.

Here it is getting ready to go under some abrasives.

Mounting the pick guard and praying it doesn't shrink any more. Lovely meatballs...

I was terrified of messing the contours up, so saved them for last.
There were like three coats on here. There was the top clear coat that came off with a strip, a white coat, a grey primer, and a white epoxy shell that took me a week to get through.

Ok a week of sanding and I reveal a lovely 5 piece body. I love that this was originally a burst...

Sent it off to Danocaster, who is even better than I expected, and got this back a few days ago:

I can't believe how much the color changes based on light. None of these actually looks like the guitar, but you get the idea.
Small cameo from my dog, Zucchini, in the lower right.

I'll try and take a few more close up/beauty shots, but this gets the idea across. I can't put the thing down...
Found the bridge cover in the case. It makes me laugh...

The person who set it up last slammed the trem down. It plays great, lovely action, but I think next project might be a new nut, a shim on the neck, and a mastery bridge.

I am also amazed at how much lighter it is. Nice thin coat of nitro, versus what ever thick plastic hell was on it before. I can't put it down, now.

That looks great. I’ve been meaning to send my 1964 jaguar to danocaster but haven’t had the time/courage to strip the body.

Oh man, have you seen some of Dano's Oly White work? It would be so nice to match that headstock more closely...
