Thoughts on this Craigslist Mustang please

Post by N0_Camping4U » Fri Oct 25, 2019 5:19 pm

Howdy everyone. A dude near me posted this Mustang for 900 dollars. These are all of the pics I have for now. I may ask for gut shots if it's worth it, but I don't know too much about mustangs so not sure if it's worth going that far. He's asking 900 bucks for it.

Definitely not original paint, Anything else look odd? In the photo of the back, does it look like the under-side of it (that would rest on your leg) has been sanded oddly? Or is it just the angle? Something about the back seems off to me... But I've never really studied a Mustang from the back and I am definitely over examining it, perhaps.

Also, it seems like the pickguard does not properly align with the neck. That isn't normal. Can't be.

Looks like a 70's one? The wiring is probably not original since the switch screws are flat head, but who knows without looking under the hood. The bridge is vintage as is likely the tremolo. You can tell by the mounds where the height adjustment holes are on the bridge. For that condition the price seems a little high to me. I feel like I see nicer condition ones for that much or not much more?

I wonder if it's an MIJ pickguard, it doesn't look old; is that routing exposed on the lower bout next to the pickguard? Neck looks nice enough. I'd say early seventies? I'd start at $500 and def. not go much over $600 (only because you could build one for about that and this guitar isn't a virgin anything.) I would ask the seller to remove the pickguard too. If it's ugly that's your bargaining chip. Pickups original?

He claims '66-69'. And a classic hands-off 'I inherited it from a father in law' or something similar. Seems like too much work to haggle for such a drastic price drop. I was thinking of doing a refin on it if it was mostly okay, but I just feel like we'd be so far off price wise it may not be worth it to haggle. I live pretty close to him and he offered for me to come check it out.

You could tell the seller that there are a few Mustangs in that age range on Reverb for about that price that look to be in better condition for that money.

Make the offer $500 now, and he'll call you back around Christmas :) Or purchase that mocha ^
