Pre-CBS Neck Gaps

Post by Mr. The Guy » Thu Dec 12, 2019 11:38 am

Greetings!

First post, longtime lurker :)

I am wondering about neck pocket gaps on pre-CBS offsets.

I understand they are normal/aesthetic, and that anything goes w pre-CBS Fenders. I guess I'm wondering: is there an established range of how big they are and why?

For example: my '64 Jazmmaster is a refin/player. I bought from a very reputable dealer, and all the markings indicate that it's all legit. My neck/body gap on the bass side is about 1.2mm! It's huge! Doesn't affect sound at all, I just wonder if anyone has a handle on how/why this happened in the old days.

Thanks!

Necks and bodies were all hand-shaped/cut so there is a lot of variance and it has nothing to do with year or model.

Imagine the exact width of a neck heel or neck pocket was subject to hand-shaping/cutting and preformed by two different workers...it isn’t uncommon to see what you see on your ‘64.
