Why didn’t Leo Fender come up with a brand new shape for the Jaguar?

Discussion of vintage Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Bass VIs, Electric XIIs and any other offset-waist instruments.

Same here. Those were good times. Now, I'm thinking about the old forum layout and wishing I had a screenshot of it.
Wait, do we still hate shortscale.org? Are they still around?

What was it they called us, "Amber switch-tip cork-sniffers"?

Good times indeed. Ben Hagerty greeting every newcomer without fail.

I think that era ended with the massive influx of new members when Lee Ranaldo's stolen mustang was found here.
Ben was cool. He was all about that tort and being friendly .

I remember the Lee Mustang thread. That was Sauerkraut, no?

I miss Orang Goreng/Zai. He was a cool cat, who just up and disappeared one day.
I speak to him via email occasionally (it's actually been about a year and a half). He seems to be well!

Hahaha, I remember some guy completely going off on ben one day because he posted "needs tort" one time too many :D

I thought ALL the shortscales were student models?

The guy in the back is playing a red Stratocaster.
The bass player has a P Bass. Not sure what this picture is supposed to prove.

All the student models were 22.5" scale until after the Mustang came out in 64.
The Jaguar was the only 24" model available until that point, and was never marketed as a student model.

Did you read any of the thread or bother reading about the history of the Jaguar at all?

Pretty clear to me: poor kid in the back , despite having the nicest haircut in the male range, has to do with his Squier, ahhm, outdated Strat. Construction department however, didn't react: as you all have noticed, the lucky Jaguar owners couldn't make use of their whammy bars due to some design flaw.
Pop is the most wonderful music – as long as it's played with three basses, a string section, and two french horns going "Vroop-Vrooo".

Not only was the Jag not marketed as a student model, it was specifically advertised as the top of the fender product line and considerably more expensive than even the Stratocaster. :D

Exactly! If the Jaguar had've been embraced by more big players in its early years, we wouldn't have such misunderstandings and misinformation going around.

(Definitely a 22.5” student model there :P )

Interesting picture though. I wonder why they put two identical* jaguars in the front row? Maybe it was the newest model at the time?

The kid on the right must be tiny - the mustang looks huge on him. Hope the lucky fella got to keep the guitar, but that’s probably unlikely.

I love these vintage guitar ads!

Cheers!

* The sunburst looks slightly fatter on the left one, compared to the centre one.

The Jaguar was the top-of-the-line, most expensive model that Fender produced from the moment of its release until Leo left the company, so that's probably why it was front and centre. The Marauder was listed even higher in the 1965 catalogue but, of course, never came out. As for the CBS years, I don't actually recall where the Coronado and Starcaster landed in the price spectrum, they might have been more due to the hollow bodies.

Did the earliest ones only come in sunburst? I thought they might at least have two of different colours for the photo.

My Jag history Knowledge is patchy.

Really? That's all you got? A gif and a childish "lol wow"? Alrighty then...

What's with this insistence from some people that a Jaguar must be a student model?
24" scale isn't even that short to begin with.
I barely notice it anymore going from guitar to guitar.
The actual student scale of 22.5" is a drastic change from standard, and is definitely tricky for adult hands, which is probably why the option disappeared eventually.

The 24" scale being later adopted as an option for the student line has no bearing on the design and intention of the Jaguar.
The Jag didn't become a student model, because Mustangs and later Duos/Musicmasters/Broncos ended up with 24" necks 3 years later.
