Price check in the Jazzmaster aisle, please.

Post by Embenny » Fri Aug 11, 2023 4:48 am

I've stumbled across a vintage partsmaster that I'm hoping you folks might help me price, based on your gut feeling and/or any recent sales you might happen to know of.

Here are the details:
Neck:
-1966 B&B
-Original frets, binding and blocks.
-Refinished headstock, replaced tuners

Body:
-1960ish, based on contours and nail holes
-Full, recent nitro refinish (matching the headstock)
-Original Pat. Pend. Vibrato and thimbles
-Replacements for everything else: Staytrem bridge, Staytrem bar/collet, modern Fender pickups/knobs, modern pickguard and pots.

What price would you consider "market value" for all that, and what price would you "want" to pay?

I'm not quite sure what to make of it, other than it being pretty and wanting to own it :D. I'm trying to put it into context with current vintage prices as well as current AVII prices, and I'm failing to figure out where it should land between the two.

Any input would be appreciated!

Based on my useless, yet exhaustive and constant price research on vintage Fenders on Reverb and Ebay, I'd say a good market price would be 3 - 3.5k . Dreamers may ask 4k and up. I think 2 - 2.5k would be a price that would make me think about it (If I was in the market). Any pics? What's the color?

Thanks for your input.

It's black. I don't have photos yet, but might soon. Which currency are you using above, by the way? I'm assuming USD.

Asking price is around the equivalent of $3k USD, which is just about what a new AVII JM costs here after tax. It seems like a fair price, but not a great one. Or at least that's my take on it. But again, realizing it's priced at around what a new AVII would cost, that feels kinda like it's on the "good deal" side of the price spectrum.

At $2k I'd jump without hesitation, that's what used AV JMs go for here, but I wouldn't expect that unless the refin was horrendous (it appears to be professional).

Cool.
I’d say whatever the parts add up to

The problem is, I have no idea what half these parts add up to. Like a '66 B&B JM neck with a refinished headstock...I have not seen any of those for sale recently. So I have no idea what that "parts value" actually might be.

My Opinion only - I dont knw exactly - so this may not help much - but I dont think the value of this as a full guitar is very high and as mentioned is only really worth the value of the body and neck. Maybe 2-3k USD If the sum of those parts adds up to a really nice guitar. Maybe a little more.

I know the guitar of which you speak, and it's a good one; the guy who owns it is a tech and he put a lot of work into the guitar. His asking price is on the higher end of fair, but still fair. Especially considering how scarce vintage JMs are in Toronto/Canada.

You do know it, hah! Have you played it? What were your impressions?

I didn't realize the guy was a tech. That inspires more confidence, since I'd have to make a pretty long road trip to check it out, and would be majorly bummed if it turned out to be an absolute mess.

That would be pretty desirable I think. No way that’s be less than £3k here I’d have thought. £3-4k would be my guess but I am just an amateur.

You're probably right. Although my Jazzmaster is the only guitar that still has one, and I use it at home a fair bit. Never live though...what a waste of space.

sounds familiar. $3k is probably fair. Too bad about the pickups. But hey it could sound great.

I mean, Mike is definitely going to put Kinmans in anyway

If I get it, that's exactly what I'm going to do, which is why I'm kinda OK with the incompleteness of the vintage parts.

Unless it was an all-original guitar with undisturbed splder joints, vintage pickups = ending up in a drawer anyway, vintage pots = likely the same...I even pulled off and sold the vintage tort guard that came with my '62 Jag, because it was a blue sparkle refinish and I knew I'd never want tort on it. Didn't want the guard shrinking too much from disuse, I'd have had to screw it to a board with pickups inserted into it.

So I moved the guard along to an OSGer who was really excited to find a vintage tort guard.

Probably wouldn't have done that with an original tort guard on a black guitar, but even then, I've never been into tort worship like some here. OLY is the only colour scheme that "needs" tort on a vintage JM IMO. I prefer gold guards on sunburst JMs, and mint/parchment on just about everything else. Black and tort would have been fine, but not my preference anyway.

So really, the body, neck, and vibrato are the only essential pieces on a vintage refin/parts guitar for me, which is why this caught my interest, if the price is right and/or I'm able to swing it. Still not 100% sure this is the right guitar at the right time for me.
