Value of 1964 JM with no neck

Post by dangayle » Wed Apr 03, 2024 10:49 am

There is a very clean 1964 JM on reverb that I'm interested in, but with no neck. I don't know enough about them to say if this is a good deal or not, how do you estimate the value of a parts guitar like this in general?

Is the neck worth x% of the value, like 1/3rd or 1/2 the value of a whole guitar? How much is depreciated off of the total value simply because it's not a whole guitar, eg., the price of the complete set is greater than the sum of the parts?

I’m by no means an expert, but I’m not sure that finish is original. Actually, it certainly isn’t because he said it had light overspray. It could be, but the burst doesn’t look right for a 64.

Also, the same guitar is also posted on eBay for sale on different listings as a full guitar. Something feels in-genuine about it.

Someone, correct me if I’m wrong.

Refinished.

A ‘64 body would have the paint stick in the neck pocket (starting in mid-63), and yes the sunburst doesn’t look quite right.

As for value, just add up the value of the parts and a refinished body and subtract some kind of discount (20%?) for buying them all together. I doubt you would reach $5k doing that math.

Agree about the neck pocket issue.
I would pass on this one: as they stopped putting pencil stamps in 64 on the bodies I do not see any solid proof that the body is pre-CBS at all... Correct me if I am wrong?

Ok, so this is one to run away from. At least, at this price.

By the way, had a look at the photos once again and the seam between the body parts look diagonal???
Also I thought it should be shifted more off the center.
