Is the pencil dating under or over the varnish....

Post by PorkyPrimeCut » Wed Jan 24, 2007 5:39 pm

My friend owns what he claims to be a 1960 Jazzmaster but the neck has no date. Is there any difference between a 59 or 60 neck anyway?? Could someone have rubbed off the pencil to make it match the guitar more?? A strange question, but one that keeps re-surfacing when we "lock horns" with guitar talk.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

There's actually a poll posted about this right now...

The general consensus is that some necks in '59 and in the first part of '60 were not dated at all...

Also, since it is pencil, it's possible that it has rubbed off or was removed by accident or on purpose at some time...
