Competition Mustang Colours?...
I know they came in Red, Blue & Orange (thank god it wasn't yellow) but what were the official names of the colours?
The red looks Dakota-like & the blue looks pretty Lake Placid Blue-ish once its yellowed. As for the orange... ?
Also, has anyone ever seen an official Custom Colour Mustang? Maybe they weren't available in the late 60's - early 70's. Didn't someone post a weird purple one a while ago??

I think "burgundy" could also mean more purplish hues, but nowadays it's more like dark red.
The original competition blue and red were metallic, but there are other colors available from Fender Japan, including white:

The turquoise one just looks like a copy of the blue one but aged, I'm not sure about the red because I can't tell if it's metallic or not.
Here are some competition Jazzmasters:

Re: Competition Mustang Colours?...
Despite the names, the "competition red" is in fact candy apple red and the blue one is LPB. Competion Orange was unique to the mustang line, but some people claim there was a small run of telecasters in this colour too.
As for the burgundy debate, a lot of the "blue" mustangs out there look almost purple burst. Though it is generally dismissed as a strange discolouration attained over the years, there are examples of otherwise minty-looking 'stangs sporting a rather pronounced burst, even on the headstock.
I've heard that a few people from "back then" claim that they started out looking purpleburst indeed.
That would certainly explain why they named the colour "competition burgundy". But I'm just guessing here.
I'm sure someone will chip in with photos of a "purpleburst" stang. There's also a big thread somewhere, IIRC.

Although I am not from "back then" this is what I believe. That the purple was intentional and sprayed on the perimeter but unfortunately not done with any consistancy. Damn, I totally missed the "Purple-Burst discussion thread!! Interesting stuff.
I'll have to say though, I prefer my Mustang just plain old LPB.
