As to the pickup...I should do some more reading - perhaps by the late 70's they had got around to specifically winding 4 polers for the entry level basses...it would be interesting to know what's lurking under the hood of Amanda's sexy black beast...she truly has scored a great looking bass!
The pickup is a Fender grey-back

I'm also interested. I will someday either find mine, or get another. They are comfy little basses and sound actually pretty damn good.
Det er mig der holder traeerne sammen.

Awesome...
To me a MM bass sounds very similar to a 51-55 single coil P Bass...all the science and physics screams impossible - but they have such great throaty and primitive bass tones...it's the simplicity of one lonely single coil pickup...I have owned post-56 P Basses all my life and have just built a couple of 51 and 55 single coil P basses and I absolutely love them, and everyone who hears them or plays them digs them too.
Hang on to your funky black bass girl and enjoy it for it is a great little bass!

Yeah I'm really excited, I guess I didn't exactly know what I had with this bass.
I've decided to try and fix the original finish and am going to call the Fender Service Center to see about a replacement decal.
Guess I'll save the metal flake for the next project!

you might have better luck finding a repro decal here on the forum - i forget who it is, but it shouldn't be too hard to search the for sale section of the board
good luck on bringing back that black finish. keep us posted with pics, please! pics =

Any ol car polish will bring that poly finish up a bit shinier...and there's heaps of ebayers doing headstock decals...I got my Bass VI decals from an ebayer goes by samsmom in NY. Just type in "headstock decal" into the ebay search box...US$20 gets you two...actually Samsmom sent me 4!

I have a 1972 Musicmaster bass in cream. I got a new pickup from Aero pickups of Hawaii that has 4 polepieces and sounds AMAZING. They are famous for this pickup, and it is a faithful reproduction of the Telecaster bass tone (early precision). Except it's REALLY loud. You can get the Mötorhead/Lemmy bass sound with ease! I highly recommend it.
I think you can probably pick it out in this picture. :-)
Best regards,
Ward

I'll bet that 3M Finesse would be a good product to use in restoring the finish. It is safe to use on poly or lacquer and works very well.

yup, + 1 for the 3M Finesse stuff.
Also, the "glue residue" from the sticker can be very easely whiped of with a cloth and some "White spirit".

Here's my '72 after a bit of a refurb.
I made a guard for it, had the colour matched and decided to just spray the top, the back was fine, beautifully yellowed and cracking up ! ( the top had some bad sanding through to the wood ).
I've gigged with it, it's a delight.
Hope yours is working out for you ...
Cheers, AP
