Re: New member, potential '64 Jag owner...w/questions
i'm glad you got it. There's something about getting a feeling like "Wow, this is made for me". And sometimes you may have to pay a little more for them than is their "realistic " value, although in your case I don't think it is so. I've paid too much for stuff that I really want and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Some might laugh at it but I go for feeling and instant kicks. There's nothing like it. Enjoy the guitar!

You're welcomejoeybsyc wrote:Thanks man! I really appriciate it. As you noted, at this point I think I'd regret NOT buying it. I've looked at a TON of Jaguars online in the past 3 days, and haven't seen a single one from $1200.00 to $10,000 that I can honestly say got me any more excited than the one I'm buying. That's gotta be worth something in itself. I too have a list of things I passed on, and another list of stuff I sold and shouldn't have... I'm hoping to add this to the list of things I didn't let slip by and later regret.
That you like is all that matters and all that should matter. Just remember... post pics! Us forumites love tha offset porn

Well, going against the current poll results, I went and bought it tonight anyhow.... and it's AWESOME. Set up perfectly, no fret buzz, amazing feeling original neck with original frets, clay dots, decal, etc. I was actually blown away by how well it plays! Plugged it into a '59 Bassman and did a little noodling through all the switch positions... I had no idea you could get strat-like tone out of a Jag! I've heard stories about tinny, twangy, toneless Jaguars, and if they exist this one certainly AIN'T one of 'em! The pickups are super... no humming, and everything from warm jazzy tones to bitey telecaster type spank. I am happy beyond words. I'm actually going out for a bit but will post pics tonight or tomorrow for sure. Got it for the price I wanted WITH an original unrefinished DEC63B dated neck and plate, the original tremolo arm, original pots, shields and wiring, Ace strap, and tolex Fender 60's case. I'll admit have ALOT of guitars, but this was my very first vintage guitar purchase, and I could not be happier. A pre-CBS Jag in probably the coolest custom color I can think of... at a price I can afford... how could that be a bad thing?

Ha, I knew it was a Stevie B guitar...http://www.gbase.com/files/store_images ... fns_so.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I played that one...and loved the coral color...and the neck that you got from the '64 was killer too. It was on a lame sunburst refinished body.
you got the best of both guitars. The neck you got is hands down the best jag neck I've felt/played. It is really great.
You lucked out. I almost bought that one 3 months ago. It's a great one.

It all comes down to wanting what you want. Good deal man. I look forward to seeing the pix. Are you saying you got an extra neck?joeybsyc wrote:Well, going against the current poll results, I went and bought it tonight anyhow.... and it's AWESOME. No, I got him to swap the neck from another 64 Jag he had, instead of the refin neck it had. As mentioned by someone else who has played this neck, it's a killer! Silky smooth with a great feel, and it's arrow straight. And yes, it was Stevie B... Just came up from FL and opened a new shop here in PA. He was good to deal with, did everything I asked him to do...I'd buy from him again.
BTW, she seems to like it here, and is already making friends.

By the way... does anyone know where i can find an original mute setup and bridge cover for it for a reasonable price? Or at least one that will fit? I'd like to get all the goodies for it now that I know it's a good player.

strat and jag pups are very similar ...I had no idea you could get strat-like tone out of a Jag
if you want vintage , then ebay is the place to go ... mutes and covers are available every now and then. Some sellers try and sell them for very high prices , but better deals can be found if you bide your timejoeybsyc wrote:By the way... does anyone know where i can find an original mute setup and bridge cover for it for a reasonable price? Does the body still have the "slug & spring" (you won't be able to see the spring) in it ? because if it does you'll only need the mute and a couple of screws (and the mute foam.)
if you do need the slug/spring they are available from guitar parts resource.
If you want to fit AV Jaguar parts , then these can be also bought from places liek GPR.

No slug or spring... just an empty hole. I guess new parts would be ok if they look the same, as i really don't know what a "good" price is for original parts.I saw one place on ebay selling a slug and spring for 16 bucks plus shipping, and another place selling new bridge covers for 12.00... didn't look up the foam kits yet. I may just buy the bridge cover and scrap the mute idea, as I know i'd never actually "use" it anyhow. Man this thing has alot of tonal possibilities... I'm a switch flippin', knob turnin' mad-man tonight!

I love the look of the bridge covers, but that's where I mute the strings. You might not want the cover if you plan on string muting the old fashioned way. That new jag of yours is one sexy beast.joeybsyc wrote:No slug or spring... just an empty hole. Thanks man... I was worried everyone would be down on me buying it after the poll results sided against it. While I DO value other's opinions, when I sat down and thought about it, I realized it was ultimately ME who had to make the decision, not the results of some random poll. I think if some of the guys against the idea of buying it actually got a chance to play it they'd have a different view. It feels amazing to me, and I'm very happy with my purchase... It plays sooo nice! As a life-long strat man I honestly was expecting it to take some getting used to, and expected to not like the sounds of it as much as a strat, but I've taken to it like a duck to water already... I think it's actually a closer transition in going from a Strat to a Jag than from a Strat to a Tele... i'm STILL trying to get a feel for my Tele's, but this seems almost "strat-like" to me.
I dig the look of the bridge covers too, and agree I would probably remove it most of the time to use my hand to mute... they just pop off and on similar to an ashtray bridge cover on a Strat or Tele, right?

Hey ... we are all here to voice opinions and advice..... but in the en d you go with what your gut tells you ... now that you have discovered the Jaguar... Iam sure you'll get GAS for another Jaguar sometime in the future
The prices you listed for the mute/slug etc are what the going prices are for the AV parts....
apart from the size of the spring/screw there is no difference between the vintage mutes and the AV mutes
Currently ebay has vintage mutes ranging from US$70 - $190 which really is just over the top.... vintage mutes shoukld not be more than $50. My advice would be grab a AV mute/slug/spring/foam and a couple of screws and you'll be fine.

Just keep watching eBay for the mute. One will pop up eventually. Look for one that is an actual auction rather than a Buy It Now listing. I was the high bidder on an auction for a vintage one for $40. Despite the fact that people like to list them with $100 Buy It Now prices, people don't usually pay that much unless they're desperate.
