Jazzmaster Vintage '64 Pickups REAL or FAKE

Post by irv78 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 7:06 am

Hi guys, I have the opportunity to buy Jazzmaster Pickups from '64 for only 200 Euros. But I'm not sure if they are genuine because I've never seen ones. I've got some photos that the guy sent me. Maybe somebody can tell me if they are genuine.

Pickup 2 (sorry, I only got this blurry pic)

Do you guys think there's something fishy with these pickups, or do they look fine to you.
Comments are greatly apreciated.

They look fine to me. I'm a bit puzzled about the stamp, as mine are from December '64 and still have handwriting on them, but it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to have overlapping systems. A yellow stamp on gray pickups was the style for a while, I forget the exact period. The only aftermarket gray ones I know are the Duncan Antiquities, and the only set I've seen in person looks nothing like these or mine.

Here's one of mine for comparison:

They look fine to me.
1964-1966 The fiber changes to a gray color and dates are applied to the bobbins. First the dates are a small stamp with the Month, day, year and initials of winder. These appear on the end of the black bobbin pickups and overlap to the early grays. Then the dates were penciled in, but by the end of '64 and early '65, we see the typical black marker style of dating

The pickups arrived! Now I have a question ... which pickup is for the neck position and which is for the bridge? One pickup has a small marker dot (see picture)

The other pickup has nothing whatsoever. Maybe somebody can put me in the right direction.

If you check the resistance put the higher one in the bridge - I think bridge pickups are typically wound a little more. If they're close it really shouldn't matter.
So I pretend there aren't ten strings tied to all ten of my fingers.

Already tried that ... but my crappy multimeter doesn't give a consistent reading. I might need a better one (it was dirt cheap).

If my memory serves me correct, then the Black/Yellow wired PU should be the bridge and the Black/White Pu should be the neck pu.
(At least that is the Fender pu wire code.)

Hmm ... the wires on both pickups are kind of white.

From what I've learned in this thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=24863 the pickup with the blue mark is usually the hotter thus meant for the bridge. But to make sure I guess I'm getting a new multimeter.
