Luvin' Mutts

Post by bterry » Tue Nov 30, 2010 12:51 pm

My dogs are mutts, my guitars are usually mutts, too.

I was playing my refin '61 today and wanted to start a thread in praise of vintage mutts - partsmasters, refins, etc.

These are the workhorses and often the guitars that sound and play the best, too - maybe you rescued one from the pound, just as it was about to be effectively euthanized by a misguided hesher? Or, maybe you're a hesher with a '59 JM routed for active humbuckers and a floyd rose?

Whatever - let's see 'em.

My '61 JM refin in metallic brown:

i've said it many times and i'll say it again... the days of my '64/'65 jazzy in pink are counted and running out. it's gonna get a rough black refin. hell these guitars look HOT!!! :?

well as most of you know, pretty much all my guitars are mutts. they've all been raped and -at the least- refinned.
but here's my top 3, so to speak (as in, more than just a refin...)

Image
well you all know the "crackwhore" '65 jag. refin and beat up. old höfner pickup in the neck. totally worn out an ALL aspects, but SO my #1. :-*

Image
the BroncoBlaster. early/mid 70s. i believe it's been refinned. custom guard and early 70s WRHB in the bridge. i can't find the trem arm - HELP! man i love this one.

Image
last but not least, my latest acquisition; the wine jazzy. '65 neck (bound stratocaster with BIG head 'n' transition logo) and refinned '61 body. we're still in the process of "getting to know each other". it might need a refin at some point, although the red/red is slightly starting to grow on me. it's something SO unique, sound and feel-wise... unlike any other jazzy, vintage or not.

of course, there's the early-70s sunburst hacked-up strat that i've pieced together from era-correct/vintage parts.
well and the "hell bass VI" with the brutalest refin ever, etc. but i don't want to post all my stuff here...

LET'S SEE 'EM FOLKS!!!

I make all these CUSTOM COLOR Danocasters - but my real love is my '65 - "Veronica" ( Elvis Costello reference )

... and she likes it when I call her "Ronnie" ;)

i'm pretty sure that's a not a strat neck. the neck code 13 was actually used on both strats and jazzmasters at the time, and only jazzmasters had binding.

Thats not correct, there were a few strats made with bound necks in '65.

I whished I had the dough, I'd make Wildwood an offer on this 62 Jazzmaster, give the mutt a good home, give it the proper decal:Image

THESE are the kind of guitars I hope to replicate with my builds ;)

Not a bad looking Jazzy, and not a bad price, either...looks as though it's been played a ton, which is probably a good thing.
