Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
That's a beautiful Mustang. I had a Mastery ready to drop into my Mustang build, but I went with the '65 Mustang bridge I bought from someone on here instead in the end. I'm not sure if a Mastery's wasted on a Mustang, but it didn't seem like a necessary upgrade at all to me, though it might well increase sustain.

No examples of this color have surfaced on jags or jazzmasters....the only other model that this color has been found on is the Fender Swinger.debudavid wrote:i keep coming back to look at these pics. such a beautiful color. was this ever used on jgs or jms?

Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
wow i never thought about that possibility... so, the purple could've been intentionally sprayed around the edges of the blue, to give it kind of a "halo" burst effect?!
can anyone confirm this?!
i have this japanese book "the authority of mustang" and it's amazing how differently they can age. some are blue, other purple, others (like mine) more greenish. and then there's the ones with the purple edges.
weird that even though yours is earlier than my MAR69, it already has the F tuners (mine has klusons).
can anyone confirm this?!

This has been a topic of conversation for some years now. Yes, I believe the halo was intentional. However many others will go to their grave thinking it's an effect of aging. We can't seem to get a consensus on the topic.
But the facts are:
1.) you don't see a purple halo on other LPB fenders....except for the Swinger (also produced 1969)
2.) Fender called this color Burgundy instead of LPB. Look up the color Burgundy, the color is purple-ish. Think Merlot Wine.
3.) With aging, vintage Fenders usually yellow: Blue + Yellow doesn't equal purple.
4.) And this:

Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
i got a few outdoor pics off:
I never had taken it apart, so it seemed prudent now.
Grey bobbin pickups with 4 digit numbers.. is there any way of dating pickups from the dates stamped?
1966 Pots.. and cloth wiring, It seems most 69's have plastic wiring from pics I've saved.
I'm thinking it's fair to say this is a '68, as the latest date on this guitar is the neckplate. 244xxx, which points at '68 along with all earlier components. No idea about the knobs, but i like it, and they are definitely wintage.
Here some purple from the trem cavity to further hamper the suggestion that the purple was a cause of "aging"

Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
Honestly, I only played it for like 5 mins before i put the mastery on. More sustain, rings out louder, and just feels more secure and tight.
I love it, as I originally contemplated just trying it and going back and forth, but literally 20 seconds with it, and I felt the improvement definitely justified the upgrade.
I had a extra one laying around which also helped facilitate it

Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
I am stoked this thread was bumped up…holy shit that guitar is amazing…I genuinely have never seen that color way before. Incredible/awesome/want…It does remind me a little of the JM's with metal flake burst from one of the NAMM 's in the 60's that I kind of want to make…but now I want to hunt one of these down...
