Clay dots with binding?

Post by joeybsyc » Tue Nov 05, 2013 7:13 pm

Saw a '65 Jag on TGP with clay dots and binding... Can't say I've ever seen another. I have a non-bound '65 L-series Jag that has pearloid dots... I would have thought they all would have had pearloid dots by the time they started with bound necks.

Are you certain those are clay?

I've got an August '65 jag neck as well, before binding, the dots look pretty similar. Mine are pearl, though, for sure.

I'm not sure of anything. I questioned it too...but the seller replied that he's certain they are clay, and that he's seen others from '65 made like this. I can't say I ever have, and I've seen quite a few. That's why I posted the question here.

Here's a link to the ad...maybe the seller is a member here too?

You can barely see it, but they appear to have the sheen that comes with pearl dots. See if you can get a close up of a dot... The ring will tell.

I agree, I think they're pearloid too... but not gonna get into a pissing match with the seller over it since I'm not a buyer on it either way.

Someone posted a CAR Jaguar on the Facebook group (not for sale tho) and I’d never heard of it either, and upon googling about it this thread was a top result.

Anybody know a thing or have examples? I assume the binding was just added to existing stock because like someone already mentioned, it went from clay to pearl to pearl with binding so overlap seems super unlikely. I’d love to see more examples.

From that photo, those do not like clay dots. They appear to be plastic, to me.

There isn’t a way that I could rationalize Fender reverting to clay after they had initially switched. As we all know, Leo was a tight ass and would have insisted on using up whatever they had left of one thing or another. They were continuously moving forward, always transitioning. Never say never I suppose, but I have yet to see one.
