welp, how did I do? yamaha sg-3! MASSIVE PICS pg. 2
I recently got to play a Yamaha SG2 and I pretty much fell for it.
I had seen some steep prices, then found this. I thought I had better keep quiet about it until I won the auction
I was real happy about the final price, but I really don't know what these have gone for lately.
whaddya think?

Great price, I think. I've seen them go for over $1000 and it looks like it's in real nice condition. And yeah, they're beautiful guitars - love the style. Man, I hope one throws itself in my path when I'm in Japan…

Re: welp, how did I do? yammy sg-3!
aye... there's a real nice SG-2 at Caveman here in L.A. it feels fantastic, but they've got it at $1500. they might budge, but it's a recent arrival and everyone is smitten with it, so they're not in a hurry to get rid of it. when i saw the 3 on ebay with the original case, i figured i could shoot it up and sell it easily if it was a dud. i'm also figuring quality control was pretty good on these, yes? so i was willing to "buy before you try"
there was a minor miscommunication with the seller, and they ended up shipping it for free. so, the $45 savings on that should just about cover the cost of a replacement trem arm!
it arrives on friday, and i believe i've got the evening free... whooppee!

^ I've never played one but if it was good enough for Link it's good enough for me
I do think the quality was very high for Japanese guitars at the time - Yamaha pulled out all the stops on these things (even if they only made them for a very short time). Then again, lots of people will tell you that Japanese guitars were all terrible until the mid- to late-70s "lawsuit" boom. But if you've played an SG-2 and liked it you should be okay. Fingers crossed for you! Let us know how you go.

when are you going? i had been thinking the same thing. i wonder how many they made. these, and the F-hole Jazzmaster they are making now would be on my list for sure.
i should have it tomorrow! man, my weekend is getting real bizzy, and much of it is swing/jazz material so i may not get to rightly rock this one until sunday night or monday

^ I'm there the day after Christmas
Not sure if I'll find one or not. Yammie SG-2s and 3s are rare even in Japan and there don't seem to be any around. If you've got any ideas where to look, let me know. Backup plan is to find me a nice old Tokai/Greco Strat.

woah - i didn't realize that about Link Wray!! and he's one of my heroes!! i saw him, must've been 1997 and i was floored. he probably was playing the Yammy that night - i remember the guitar was bright red and kind of modern/pointy but had no clue... overtaken by sheer rock bliss. i do recall he would work that trem pretty hard all night.

i have no clue where to look, really. i think my favorite Tele is an early Greco, from Matsumoku. some folks say they're not as good as 70's ones, and mine even has a three piece neck, but it's so comfy and rings out very well, it feels more like a vintage Tele than my American 70's/80's/90's ones.

Wow! Good score. I've always liked the looks of these. I just could never find one. Let's just say when you get it and if it's not for you give me a PM!

Re: welp, how did I do? yammy sg-3!
wow. what a sweet sounding guitar! the neck feels familiar a la my '59 Jazzmaster, they must have been aiming for that, not nearly as chunky as my 60's Greco. the pups sound great. it does sound in the realm of the JM, but the middle position gives a real useful strat kind of scoopy sound, moreso than the JM.
it's in damn good shape, there was one little mishap probably from shipping, but it looks like an easy fix. i wish i had more time to play with it, i'm rehearsing a lot with my Epiphones for a jazzier sound for the next batch of shows.
