Re: The Unofficial OSG 60s Yamaha SG Thread
So, I picked up a SB-5A at an affordable price (yay!)
...and it arrived with some issues - it's usually a bad sign when a guitar arrives in the mail and I can see the case through holes ripped in the side of the package! Luckily, the only damage I could see at first was one of the latches got knocked off of the case.
It was shipped with the strings in place, so I put it in tune and played it a bit to see if things were pretty much in order, and it seemed okay other than a buzzy bridge.
...but when I stripped it down for a thorough cleaning, I found out that the neck was held on by ONE SCREW! Jeez! It wasn't even one of the outer screws - it was one of the machine screws on the "tongue" at the end of the neck. So weird that someone would attach a neck with one screw and then bother to screw the neckplate on (...with two of the correct screws and two screws from the thumb rest...)
That should be simple enough to fix - a trip to the metric section of the hardware store. However, I have some bigger issues with he bridge that you folks might be able to help out with. Of the eight height adjustment screws, one had disappeared from a drilled out (and unthreaded!) hole, three had non-metric 4-40 setscrews jammed in place, and the other four appeared to be original. I was able to get 4 out of the saddles (they'd been glued in place!) but three broke off. so I needed to drill the broken screws out.
It looks like they're M3 setscrews with .6 pitch. I've been able to find the correct tap, but it looks like the size is pretty rare. Does anyone know of a source for M3 setscrews with the correct pitch, or should I just drill these saddles out for some M4 setscrews?

I got some adjustment saddle screws for my yamaha sg-12 from china on ebay after a tip from my local hardware guy.
So maybe it's just a size that's widely available in the japan/china region?

Can anybody here shed some light on the finishes they used on these? I've never seen one that's particularly relic'd or whatever so I assume some sort of polyester but google isn't turning anything up. Thanks in advance!

I know its not offset, or an SG, but I wanted to share with you all my new Yamaha SA-15. I've had this guitar for almost a month now and I fucking love it! The pickups are incredible and the fully hollow body resonates acoustic tones through my twin reverb in the perfect way. I want more Yammies!!!!

They are great guitars... the 15D is even cooler with checkerboard binding..... I also see that the Bass equivalent (even rarer) has just popped up in a shop in Melbournebacca51 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 10:40 amI know its not offset, or an SG, but I wanted to share with you all my new Yamaha SA-15. I know, I wish I had the 15D, the 15d has fret markers. I had to put those fret marker stickers on the sides of my neck.venompstinger wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 3:10 pmThey are great guitars... the 15D is even cooler with checkerboard binding..... Still, mine was in a local shop for a while on consignment from the original owner, so I got the luxury of actually playing it and working out a deal.

Re: The Unofficial OSG 60s Yamaha SG Thread
Its a poly finish of some sort. I wouldn't entirely compare it to modern stuff, I guess.
They definitely dent and bump in the same order as a poly finish but it has a bit of a old finish cool vintage vibe. Same as my eko cobra for example.
Maybe it's just thinner than the modern ones.
I own (too?) many of these and they all are a bit worn in a different way, I have a blue SG-2C where the blue turned greenish at some spots.
My pearl white SG-2 has a lot of wear and tear but in a really cool way where the bumped pearl just turns a bit more grey-ish.

Dunno if I'll actually be able to pull the trigger but I'm really hoping I can.

This is a bit of cheating (reissue alert)
But I find this a lovely video where a SGV-800 is being put to good use by the band Kruangbin

Re: The Unofficial OSG 60s Yamaha SG Thread
Here's a question for those of you who have a SG-2 or 3. I love love love the sound of my SG-2, and would like to get pickups that sound the same for another project. What pickups are close to the sound of the Yamaha's? I assume some sort of P90? that's the one style pickup I have very little experience with.

Checkerboard binding, so rare, but so great when you find it!venompstinger wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 3:10 pmThey are great guitars... the 15D is even cooler with checkerboard binding.....
