maybe they sobered up, realised they'd ruined two great guitars and simply abandoned their house rather than having to look at them again?sir h c wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:24 amSo, abandoned house, leaky roof, vintage guitars...

The fret markers from the D'Angelico are poorly put into the 1959 Jazzmaster (which is mostly "fretless").

The sharpie'd on "fender jazzmaster" at a wonky angle really makes it for me, you can almost see the letter where the modder gave upsir h c wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:24 amSo, abandoned house, leaky roof, vintage guitars...

They did really miss an opportunity to call it something like a jazz²master though

Hell yeah, especially at that price. I’ve always been obsessed with the Lee Ranaldo Deimel guitar of which they ended up using an x-ray for the cover of Corporate Ghost and would love to get the chance at least to try something like that out. This scratches that itch pretty well I’d sayCeylon wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 12:01 pmI'd actually really want a Jazzmaster with this mod. It's a bit too expensive, and it doesn't seem to be all that well done but yes, I'd rock this.Pacafeliz wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2020 4:44 amOh wow... people STILL do this?!

Not to bad, could be salvaged. What historical value do you put on a psychedelic refin/carve done in 1967?

Unfortunately, it would be valued in negative dollars. ...unless it is somehow "historically significant," I guess?invisible man wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 12:56 pmNot to bad, could be salvaged. What historical value do you put on a psychedelic refin/carve done in 1967?
When something is modified to meet the tastes of the time, it really never increases the value. (be it LSD woodburning projects, 70's walnut stain and brass hardware, EVH stripes and Floyd Installs, or whatever.)
I guess the only exception is if a guitar gets some expensive parts bolted on - like a $75 plywood Teisco with a pair of original wide range humbuckers will probably sell for the price of a pair of original wide range humbuckers.
...but not for the cost of an unmodified Teisco plus the cost of the pickups.

not to art shame- that is fine, but I'd have no qualms about filling it and painting that a solid colour.
If it was really colourful, more typical of the time stuff, a bit out there like the Monterey strat or George Harrison's guitar, regardless of whether the person who did it was famous or not, I'd leave it alone.

I think that sketchy acidhead wood carving is funny and weird enough to keep as-is. It's a million times more interesting than a competent nitro refin and no less valuable an instrument than it would be if it had a more generic finish. Seems weird to me to want a vintage instrument (ie, something with a bit of history to it) and then paint over the actual history.
I'm all for stripping and refinishing crappy poly refins from the 80s, but getting MJT to do a light cosplay finish on something like that thing makes no sense to me.

I think I agree, but part of me would want it more colorful. I have seen at least one vintage Jazzmaster with vintage psychedelic paint job on here I would rock as-is. I can picture it but can’t remember the link. Yellow swirls on the headstock, maybe blue and burgundy swirls too, kinda sloppy but decent design...

Something very messed up going on there. Never mind the indentations from what looks like being melted by a soldering iron, both pickup's bobbins are warped/misshapen/tapered in the weirdest way.
Would not buy.

I say this as a person who just got a '63 JM refinished in plain jane charcoal frost and kind of wish I'd done something more interesting with it.
