...well check out this amazingly wonderful old Ibanez Jazz Bass... WITH A BULLET!!!

Image
...or just a HOLE in it...

why? he tells the story: they were playing at some local festival in france and they were afraid that somebody could steal their gear. so they put holes in the instruments and chained them to something... with a massive chain!

dang... but it IS quite a history (in one pic he even put a chain thru it! :D

From the auction listing:

"For sale: This instrument was custom made for my father in the early 1960's. It is a fusion of a Fender 1960 Jazzmaster guitar and 4 string Mandocaster. My father was a well respected Country/Bluegrass musician and this instrument is well played with wear noted on the neck and fretboard. He had this made because he would often play both in a single song, and switching was easy. Everything on it is original from the time, including buttons, knobs, tremolo bar, pick ups, etc. The strings were changed over the years, of course. The peghead for the high E string on the guitar is dmaged, but works fine. This guitar plays so easy and smooth. I have included pictures that represent most views, but if you would like additional pictures, message me and I will send them. I have plugged this in and they both work through amplifier, although I am not a professional musician. It is surprisingly lightweight and the strap holders allow for great balance. Because of the unusual shape, there is no case included. My father made a case from plywood that it has been stored in, but the weight to ship that would be prohibitive, cost wise. This is both a collector's item and a versatile musical instrument for the right person. My father passed 12 years ago, and I have kept this because I am the only one of his children that play. I have not played this for years, and I feel he would be happy if this found a home where it was played. Message me with any questions before bidding. "

It looks like it was played a lot.

I think it's kinda cool, in a "I had to do what I had to do" kind of way.

"Collector's Item" it is NOT. It would be a lot easier on the eyes if the top portion of the mando body hadn't been taken off (I assume it was for ergonomic reasons), and if it wasn't that horrible diseased flesh color.

"Collectors item" - maybe not. "Weird piece of music history" for sure. I'll bet someone bought this knowing who played it back in the day. And I'll bet we see it again, with more to the story. Deke Dickerson loves this kind of thing.

I wonder if the top part of the mandolin wasn't cut off after the initial construction, along with the upper horn on the Jazzmaster, for ergonomic issues.
And, I bet it wasn't always quite that ugly color - lots of bars and smoke made this thing the diseased flesh color it is today.

I kinda like this one - it’s rare to see a mod like this that wound up getting used A LOT. (Instead of hidden away out of shame.)

It was done in the 60s for someone who had a good reason and I think the text is very honest about the instrument. It's probably the only guitar in this thread that answers the title's questions "Why did you do it?" and "Why did you do this thing to me?" in a single picture and an Ebay description.

I've got a soft spot for these old western swing/country bar band abominations, hope it gets left as it is rather than 'restored'

Clearly it's been around. It's got a pit stain, for Christ's sake. Not hating on it, it was clearly used and beloved by the owner's dad. It seems practical and it probably sounds great, it's just ugly as sin. With a fresh coat of paint it might not be anything too terrible.
