Regal R272 Restoration

Post by Connorater » Mon Jul 07, 2014 5:57 pm

So when I was in Austin I found an old Regal Hollowbody with Dearmond Gold Foil Mustache Pickups, for only 235$ and I figure this could be my first repair.

Here's the imgur album link http://imgur.com/a/BOrjQ?gallery
The body doesn't appear to have any clear coat left on it, and the whole thing definitely needs to be cleaned up

However I love the finish and all electronics work on it, the bridge pickup just needs a bit of adjustment. So I will be making the repairs needed.

Repairs: New tuners, new nut, bridge, new set of knobs (the clear ones are cheap and nasty), new tailpiece preferably a Bigsby if I can mount one, new strap button.

Finish and the like: Needs clear coat.

Edit: Can anyone tell me if the imgur link is working?

Nice find, looks like fun. Link is working fine. Why not go for some trapeze tailpiece instead? Looks like it had one originally. Have fun

All my guitars currently are stoptail and I play a lot of stuff that should be played with a trem arm, and I might as well make it a little bit of my own right ;D

I just need to figure out what knobs and the like can fit it.

Dropping the Bigsby idea for now, anyone know if Grover Tuners sold through Stewmac would fit the guitar? I found a tailpiece there that should fit in addition to switch tips and the like.

IF I was to put a bigsby on it does anyone know what bigsby would fit the guitar? B-5? B-7?

I reckon you'd have to drill for most modern tuners. StewMac have the hole dimensions etc on their website - you need a pair of calipers to measure the size of the drilled holes so you can find out what will fit. Otherwise, there's always dowel-and-drill!

Nice snag. Goldfoil pickups alone are going for close to that these days. The word is out, unfortunately.

As for tuners, there are a lot of vintage ones floating around that will work for that guitar, that can be had pretty cheap. I'd go that route.

I would go for something like the Grover Sta-Tite:

Vintage look and mounting but with modern 18:1 action and only ~ $40 shipped.
Q. Are we not men?

Thanks guys, any idea which tailpiece from Stewmac would fit this one, is it suited for a thin body or one of their Kluson tailpieces.

In addition would a Tuneomatic Archtop Bridge fit it?

Sorry for all the questions, this is my first restoration. :squint:

IMO- leave the finish exactly as it is...it's not like there was a clearcoat that fell off or something, that's just what the original finish looks like after 50+ years- damn cool imo!

Also- surely that's a rebranded harmony or something...should be pretty easy to find a proper vintage bridge/tailpiece for not much money.

I did a look around and found a bunch of tail pieces that looked like the one on this model and claimed to be vintage for pretty cheap, the bridge however seems to mostly be for their "Bobkat" model which I do not believe is compatible.

I'd sweat less over the bridge... Thats one area where I'd settle for any decent quality bridge- ideally an intonatable one!

Would be cool to have the correct tailpiece though, especially with that cool darkening to the rest of the finish except for where the original was
