melody maker SG, worth it?
at a pawn shop I saw a red MM SG. red, 2 pickups.
some dicknose put rail humbuckers or something in it.
selling for $750
is it worth it to get it, try to find original pickups for it, and re-sell it?
it was hanging up on the wall, not sure what year it is, or if any other issues.
at another place, there's a blue one for $1800, it's been there over a year now.
worth the time, effort and spend-money-to-make-money?

Probably not.
Finding original pickups could be difficult and then finding someone interested in buying it could be even harder - a collector is looking for original, unmessed condition right down to solder joints... You could end up making a loss on it.

Even original 60s examples only go for $1000 - $1250 - pickups will cost you $250 I reckon, even if you had no trouble selling, it's a large risk for a small margin.

I'd leave it to be honest, if its red then its Cardinal Red, which isn't as desirable as Pelham Blue on a vintage Gibby. Don't think they made these models in other colours.

Inherently a Melody Maker isn't an expensive guitar, however, some vintage ones are getting up there. But those are pretty much as they were when they were vintage, otherwise, the value isn't there. They wouldn't be as collectible.
So, I doubt this Melody Maker is worth that money with the rude modifications made to it.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I've played a blue one before at a shop.LarsL wrote:It could be a awesome player. For 750 its worth to check it out. Imo
they're asking over 1k for it.
it's been there well over a year.
I like the looks of it, but I can't gel with any Gibson neck.
I've got a Vox sdc22 to cover my SG aesthetic needs.
just thought I could flip the red pawnshop one,
I found a set of MM pickups online for $120
but if it's not worth the risk...

$750 is a good price if you just want to play it and keep it. Might not be a great deal if you want to flip it.

Re: melody maker SG, worth it?
went again today and inspected it
they say it's 1967
serial# is 001450
besides the pickup swap, it's been re-fretted.
has all the bumps, dents, dings you'd expect
and a couple chips on the back of the neck.
everything else seems stock.
the blue one at the other shop is in worse condition.

Forget it.
This thread has been up nearly two weeks. If either of them were worth the asking prices, they'd have been gone two weeks ago. This is the internet, someone would have tipped a collector/dealer off.
The one with the wrong pickup will never fetch a profit, because it doesn't have the original solder joints.

though I find a lot of good deals here because I live in a small city on an island populated by retired people.
sometimes I sell stuff on CL and get emails from Vancouver and Seattle asking if I could take the ferry there and sell it to them, because they cant be bothered coming here themselves.
and it's a common thing that some geezer dies and his wife doesn't know shit about what he had, so takes it to music shops around town and they give her pennies for it.
but anyway, I realize this MM SG isn't worth the time and effort. Cool piece, but not something I'd play myself.

My gf told me I should track down deals here, then take a bunch of gear to Vancouver and swap it there.
I lived in Vancity some years ago, and I spent more time on CL more than I was ever on facebook.
Lots of cool shit for sale, but never really any good deals... only thing I remember was that I got a DM2 from some old fart for $40 cuz he thought "it's old, cant be worth anything" then I sold it for $350

Re: melody maker SG, worth it?
As a player I'd say that's a fair deal. For a good refret you'd be looking at $300-400. So if you like the guitar and plan on actually playing it as opposed to treating it like trophy or "investment" to me it's worth it. There are good options for Melody Maker replacement pickups these days. Let's be honest here, those originals sound awful.
