WOW that was great! I wasn't crazy about the finish / color in the end but given the condition of the guitar before, I'd be quite happy with it!

Re: Patching a hole in a 1953 Telecaster
He did a really good job of what he was asked to do- but I reckon some of those weirdo, clearly 'done in the fifties by some bar band' mods should be left alone. It's not like it was floyded up by some bonehead in the 80s...
I bet that would have looked super cool- imagining it with the ancient sawn off Bigsby and some rhinestone initials etc on it etc. Other guitarist playing a Paul Bigsby guitar with a mandolin growing out of the upper horn.

Can't believe they had to have that camera cover flown in!

I love watching Dan work- he's a real genius and craftsman in restoration work on electric and acoustic guitars. I wish I had his workshop and the lifetime collection of tools he has at StewMac, but his experience is key to what he does. It would be cool to have access to the wood/lumber he has at his disposal as well- thanks for sharing!

Impressive work, but it almost seemed like vandalism to me. A 50's Tele modified to use a Bigbsy seems pretty classic to me. It's like he erased the history from the guitar.

Agreed. He did amazing work, but I kinda love unique. If that thing had survived 40-50 years with a bigsby mod, not sure I'd want to just patch over that.mgeek wrote:He did a really good job of what he was asked to do- but I reckon some of those weirdo, clearly 'done in the fifties by some bar band' mods should be left alone. Also agree- but he does what the customer wants, right or wrong, and it gives a chance to share his skills and techniques to novices like me! I would have left it as is myself- would Willie Nelson ever have Martin totally restore his acoustic? Sacrilege!

I think I'm in the minority here. I LOVED the patch, but I hated the relicing. He did a good job with the relicing, but to me, if you've got a guitar that old with that much history into it and are breathing all new life into it, leave it look fresh again and put your own wear on it :-) That was a really good watch though.

Yeah, the bigsby hack was ugly and a proper restoration is the ideal, including a clean new finish.Shadoweclipse13 wrote:I think I'm in the minority here. I LOVED the patch, but I hated the relicing.
