Anyone have a solution to pickup cover not laying flat?

Post by maxxx » Thu Mar 08, 2018 4:08 pm

Has anyone had this problem with jazzmaster pickup covers?
is this normal with 1960 ish era?
was thinking the pickguard shrunk and has pushed the sides of the covers.

Looks to me like the pole pieces aren't going through the covers and it is pushing the plastic up. You can use a small drill bit to carefully enlarge the holes so the cover sits flatter.

Most likely the foam under the pickup has broken down , its not pushing the pickup , up into the cover.
If the pickup cover itself is binding up from pick guard shrinking , then the pick guard opening/s need to be lightly scraped with an exacto , or sanded with fine grit sandpaper wrapped around a pencil , do not use a dremel or anything aggressive.
It only takes micro amounts of material to be removed , no more than the thickness of a sheet of paper in any one area. Only scrape the areas that drag , recheck the pickup fit often.
Fresh foam underneath , and freeing up the stuck pickup covers , will restore the pickup adjustability , necessary to get the guitar sounding as good as possible.

Im sure the foam has broken down but i feel the issue is also the plastic has bowed and
is permantly that shape is there a wax i can easly find and use to help seat the pole pieces into the cover?

Pickup cover looks too high, for one thing. The foam hasn't necessarily broken down; you'd probably need extra foam to push the pickup up that high.

In the side photo, you can see the line from where the pickup used to be. Maybe you tried to raise it? Someone seems to have, anyway. The cover's awfully close to the strings now.

If you really want it that high, then opening it up and adding some extra foam under the pickup is the way to go.
