I think if you can sand out the burst on the bottom where you have the blue paint nearly removed, and then sand the top where you have blue remaining and scrub the artwork out there, then stain black across the top, like the black is done on some Gibson guitars:



So you have the all-dark fade at the top with fade around the lower rim showing the artwork swirls.

The back of your guitar looks cool with the original artwork and I'd leave that, maybe clear coat over it all.

What was a part of my decision of taking that finish off afterall was that NGD post from HNB for the two tone burst Casino he got. Reminded me how much I love two tone and dark bursts!!

Tuners are fine now !!!

After a three days bath (mostly because I forgot to take them off of it), I got a bit worried because they were still stuck.

I got scared of using strength to make them move.

Then a friend was here and I asked him if he coud use his strength because he obviously was not emotionnaly attached to the success or the fail of the process.
Aaaand succeeess !!!!
Everything is working.
Just had to sand the rust under the tunning pegs and on the wheels, and it was a done job:


I kept a bit of rust because I like it and because I was afraid of sanding the wheel too much by mistake.

Van Ghents are safe and they will be back on the headstock very soon

UPDATE !!!

After several hours of screwdriver tip use :


The blue had been removed.

After several several several hours of sanding with 150 :


The swirls had been removed.

Had a few hours more with 150 :


And I got something cool to work with.

Then I used 320 :



Then 400 :




Then 600 :


And 2000 :



It was time to apply some guitar polish to complete the work :





I am very pleased with how it went. I really like that burst. The finish looks a bit like it's matte...but it's not. It's very in between.
Also it's soft as silk, incredible feeling, I can't stop touching the wood !!!

I'll try to post better pics with my proper camera. The Iphone ones are obviously shitty.

Anyway.
I know this could have been done effortlessly, with paint removals and all and proper tools, but I'm glad it was that time consuming and asked so much effort. It was a way to really bound with the guitar and the work was fun to do anyway.

Next things to do are :
- checking electronic
- checking the pickups
- think of that pickguard
- take it to a luthier for the final setup...because the action is very high (because of the bridge I think) and the strings are slipping... there is no hole to guide the strings on the nut bridge.

Shit, that bridge sucks afterall

But the body is done

Great effort and results! Now we want to see you remove all that overspray from the inside and the pickup cavities. What are you waiting for?!

And it's a marvellous guitar.

I just restored it to its former and stock glory. Nothing invasive, not knowing if I'd keep that guitar (thinking resale ). But now I really think I will keep it, because of its story, first, and then because of everything it gives me : the body is very resonnant, the neck is quite thick but very narrowed, so I can play it and like it, the pickups are very hot (about 12 each) and I tuned it to B.
So it's a baritone
And it's a great looking guitar imo.




Nothing more to say, except that I really like this guitar and I really like the idea of having it in the stable.
And yeah,
