Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, started working on it
Thanks,
Yeah I love the grain too. I kinda like natural finishes.
Maybe because my 2 favorite guitars are a vintage mustang (slightly modded) and a vintage yamaha sg-2a that both lost their paint along the way.
AKA surfin_bird's pawnshop models I guess.
I'm not sure if I'm going to stain it but the grain stays.

Good to hear it! Sounds like you have a great oddball collection, I love SG-2s! That Iceman-like horn really gets me.

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, started working on it
OK so I'm close to have sanded the whole body down to some nice wood and I've plugged the holes.
I also received some parts from brandoni. It's not unlike they told me original. The arm doesn't look the same at all and the screw for the arm didn't fit.
I found an original english sized screw and managed to get the arm on.
The knobs I bought from brandoni look original but don't the pots who are on the guitar at the moment....
here is everything "together", with a jazz bridge in the TOM timbles.
And I have installed the replacement middle pickupl kindly donated by knpknpknp. Thanks again!
Al together it doesn't look as well as I thought to me at this point, so I'll probaby going to make a new pickguard or stain/colour the body.
Lol maybe it needs spitfire tort? and maybe firebird pickups?

That arm could actually be correct but is just missing the black plastic tip.
It looks as though the originals were the same as the one on my Ultrasonic.
Have you seen this?

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Hey, yeah I've seen it. But the black tip is solid with a little hole in it because the original has a needle kind and at the arm for the tip to be put on.
like this http://store.phantomguitars.com/tremolo ... t-arm-kit/
I got an answer back from brandoni that they fit all their guitars with these arms, and well it's way cheaper than the phantom works one.
Know I need to wait for phantom works to answer my email for ordering some string rollers for the tremolo, since they're better than the (broken) plastic ones I have.

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, update 05-22-2014
Little update:
Didn't know if I told it before but the pickups are real so thats good news:
http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/vox ... kups.php#1
I just bought one of these TOM roller saddles. which are going to be put in the old tom bridge.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-ROLLER-ELEMEN ... 2c60c0de0b
And I ordered some rollers for the vox tremolo.
So now I need to order some tru-oil.
Then all is left to assemble and clearcoat this thing and get it ready to try it out.
After I have it restringed and played for a while i'll have a go with electronics.

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, update 05-22-2014
Isn't that a Vox Consort, not a Spitfire? http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/vox/Consort.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Loads of them are very similar, but I'm getting the vibe that this is one of the UK models, not italian. I had a 'Super Ace' with those pickups in, and it sounded excellent.
Obv your guitar, so if you want natural, then cool, but I saw one of these in the original pastel blue once, and it was
ps- the 'morganite' pots, all wiring etc is original, so if you don't like them for some reason, be sure to stash them in the case.

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, update 05-22-2014
Hey I'm pretty sure it's a spitfire, because it doesn't have a hank marvin tremolo.
Actually mine used to be the blue pastel because there are still left overs of it under the red paint in the cavities.
I wasn't aware that the pots are original so now I went from thinking that nothing was original to all the electronics are original
So maybe I'll just finish it in tru-oil now and to finally have it refinished in the blue color. It's really starting to look that it's worth to restore this guitar.
thanks for the extra info!

No worries! Pretty sure it's a consort (second type) though, despite lack of Hank trem - the body is wider than the spitfire, and the scratchplate is a different shapesurfin_bird wrote:Hey I'm pretty sure it's a spitfire, because it doesn't have a hank marvin tremolo.

There were often little differences between batches of Vox guitars at the time, so the slight difference in scratchplate shape from that catalogue image, and the different trem wouldn't be that unusual.

First layer of tru-oil applied. It's getting more obvious that it's a 2 piece body.
Look at the knots in the left top, they have that birdseye look. I dig..
this project is getting slowly finished.
I'm still waiting for phantomguitars to finally continue my order for the tremolo saddles, cause all I get is a reply that the shipping costs are:... (went from 6 to 10 $ the past 6 months) but no paypal order.. s#cks.
I'll probably just ask an friend in LA to ship them...

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, update 08-24-2014
I love Vox amps and gear, I didn't know they made off-sets like this. I always just think of the tear drop.
I work for a small luthier shop called the Guitar Mill that has a large selection of vintage-correct Off-Set bodies and necks and produces Mario Guitars. I also play a Fender Mustang bass in my band Parasite Diet.

Re: 1964 Vox Spitfire, update 08-24-2014
Ohh vox made a lot of cool guitars!
I really hope to start assembling this guitar soon!
But still no order from phantom guitarworks... They should work on their communication skills for their foreign costumers.
A friend of mine wants to get a phantom but starting to be hesitant because of my experience.
Anyways a interesting guitar popped up on ebay:
This is probably proof that this is a Vox Consort; since mine was the same colour (I found out that under the red in the cavities there is still the original blue present) Also the body shape and pickguard material seem the same. The only difference is the tremolo and the pickguard shape near the bridge.
So probably a transition period guitar. But this makes me stoked! I'm even convinced that the neckplate is original.

Told you so!
Ps, it's not a transition model or anything. UK made Voxes were just built with loads of variations...
