Personally, I don't think that would be a very good idea, as it would really clutter up the threads...One of my favorite things about OSG is how clean the layout is.  No goofy signatures with pics,  colored fonts etc.

It's up to the staff, of course.

I meant for in posts. It would be a lot nicer than a list of youtube links.

imho.

A list of youtube links is much more organized and neat, than a bunch of embedded vids.  That's just a mess, and really hard to navigate.

We must be talking about two different things then.  I couldn't disagree more. Having an image on the post that gives a clue as to whether a video is something want to watch and being able to watch it in the post rather than opening a new window . .sorry, just do not see your logic at all.

Nothing personal, but you don't need to see my logic.  Besides, I have no say in what the admins and mods do here.  It's merely my opinion.  ;)

Basically part of the forum aesthetic is to keep it as minimal as possible .. only two-line text signatures, no animated avatars or .gifs in posts .. so having videos in posts would kinda go against that.

It makes a bit more sense if you know the background of when the forum was founded .. most of us came from a forum where the management wanted money in fees, status was determined by how much you paid up - and what members contributed in the way of info was largely irrelevant. So this forum was conceived as a free information source first and foremost, run by and for enthusiasts .. and the aesthetic was chosen to allow text and pictures to stand out clearly, and also to minimize bandwidth so that we hopefully never have to ask people for money.

This also accounts for why we chose to confine buying/selling to specific areas .. we're about info, not transactions. (Truth be told we're probably a pretty rubbish way to sell stuff, which is fine by us.)

So some forums seem to have a focus on entertaining banter, some on acquiring and turning over gear .. that's cool if that's what they want to do, and you will see both those things go on here but it's not what we're basically about.

I think once you get to know the people here you know if a link they post is something you would want to look at. I personaly wouldn't change a thing about SOG.com, just my $.02

It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yer going to hate me for this - but an embedded youtube video in a post really has no effect on bandwidth. No more than being able to post images.

Hey guys, it is an idea. You all seem pretty set in things staying the same. I understand.

As far as being around - read the board for awhile before I posted and got a pretty good explanation of the history from one of the mods. Still, I understand the feelings of, "Hey, you have ten posts! Who are you to say anything!"  I am coming across pretty strong for a newbie.

Finally, your forum is fantastic!  The talent evident from member's bands and their guitar set-ups and knowledge of technical details is a great!

Would love to see a paypal donation tab at the bottom! I'd throw a few bucks each month yer way for sure!!!!!

Rich

Honestly, I change just about everything at SOG.com.  For starters, take away the links to knives and make them links to cool bands and/or hot chicks.  Then I'd add some Sonic Youth video clips to keep me entertained while checking out the links. Next I'd some nice amp and pedal gut shot porn along the bottom and lastly I'd place a button somewhere obvious that had delicious Japanese food and a desperately horny cheer leading squad sent to my house every time I pushed it.

Heh, yes I realize that as an embedded link it isn't our bandwidth - it was more a general comment on one of our underlying motivations. We really are not into asking for donations; from what we've seen on other sites it can lead to "class" distinctions, people wanting to pay to dictate forum content or moderator decisions, stuff like that. The sort of contribution we're after is just info: knowledge, how-tos, history, pics .. and everyone gives very generously, I think we've been far luckier with our membership than we dared expect.

I don't think anyone has a problem with you or anyone expressing their opinion if it's done politely, which you have. We do occasionally get new members breaking various rules and telling us why we shouldn't have those rules or why they shouldn't apply to them or how it's done better elsewhere .. less cool. But we're never beyond discussing things in a civilised fashion, I hope.
