NGD: Tom Verlaine's Jazzmaster

Post by happyhalloween » Sat Aug 18, 2012 8:28 am

You all know the drill, long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve wanted a Jazzmaster ever since I first heard Sonic Youth when I was in high school. There is something magical to me about its sound, not to mention its look. Then I heard Nels Cline, Kevin Shields, Ira Kaplan, and many others, and I knew it was the guitar for me. I’ve played countless Jazzmasters since then, even pulled the trigger on one only to have the seller back out, but now I’m glad I waited, because I got something really special.

I saw a Jazzmaster owned by Tom Verlaine on eBay this past weekend, and decided to take a chance on it. Tom is a huge influence on my playing, and the guitar is incredibly unique and beautiful. Apparently, it's from a limited run of 12 1958 reissues that were only given to the artists who played the Jazzmaster 50th Anniversary concert 4 years ago, and mine/Tom's is the only one in black!

My OCD is telling me to get a tremolo arm with a black tip, and eventually I’d like to try a Mastery Bridge, but for now I couldn’t be happier. It plays and sounds great, and I’m really honored to have it. Without further ado:

I didn't see that! I considered posting about it on here, to see if the experts thought it was the real deal, but I didn't want anybody outbidding me! I was so sure it would skyrocket at the last minute, but it never did, so I knew it was the right time to step up.

Yeah a number of us were eyeballing it, I think, imagining it would get silly expensive or something. I was shocked when it just kind of... didn't! HNGD, I'm sure you will love it!

Congrats! I'm glad it's gone to someone who appreciates it, totally shocked to see it get just the one bid.

I was wondering who snagged that.. Great looking guitar.

How is the neck profile?

Absolutely, however I have no interest in disassembling it at the moment, especially for a minor cosmetic detail. It's easy to ignore when you're playing ;D

Thanks! It feels very nice. No thrash covers for me, but it's not a baseball bat either: Just right. Comparable to the nicer AVRI's I've played. I couldn't tell you specs for sure, but I believe it's got a 7.25" radius. It's longer & chunkier than my Ibanez (which, thank you very much StereoStereo for noticing) but that's exactly what I wanted. Does that answer your question?

Happy NGD to the OP. That guitar is a beauty! Black trem tip all the way with the current cosmetics.

Yes, Thanks. I was looking at this but couldn't get the money moved around in time and the neck profile/shape was my biggest question- So congrats again! That is a heckuva first Jazzy.

On a semi-related note: This went cheaper than an Elvis Costello Jazzy the ended recently.

that is truly a badass looking jazzy!

one question though, it that tremolo on it like a NOS or something cuz it looks to have the vintage aspects, rounded trem lock and fatter trem arm assembly, but looks new, unless im ill informed, if so plz correct me
