Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
Been looking at lots of pics of J Mascis purple edition Jazzmasters and the bridge looks angled (rotated anti clockwise)
anyone have clues as to why? not seen this on any other jazzys - not even the squire edition
scuse the newbie question if it's really obvious

Re: Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
Most guitars built with tunematic bridges have it angled like that to help intonation. So if you look at les pauls and SGs they almost all have the angled bridge. I assume that since this guitar was built with a tunematic rather than modified to have one, they put it in on angle to give you better intonation, espcially considering the limited range the tunematics saddles have compared to other bridge designs.

Yep - this ---- ^^^^^
It's a good thing that they do this - as even with the angle/slant the tuneomatic design can sometimes have issues intonating certain strings unless you flip the saddle around (the original/old type sland on one side and have one flat side ... you want the flat side to be nearest the bridge pickup to give you the maximum range of movement that way in my experience).
This issue with tuneomatics (and people moving away from 'traditional' string sets with wound G strings, which was what the tuneomatic was designed to work with) was the reason for the Nashville type bridge (which has more travel for each individual saddle and largely solves the issues).

Re: Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
ok makes sense, but if that's the case why isn't the squire set up the same? still a tunamatic no?
also with the current angles can you put a mastery bridge on or will it have issues lining up the intonation?

Also worth noting, only the Japanese Fender offsets did this. They also released an HH Jazzmaster and Jaguar that had the angled bridge.
EDIT: The angled bridge also appears on the Modern Player JM.

A forum member on here recently posted one with a mastery and he said the intonation and function is all the same with the angled posts

Installing a Mastery Bridge is a fill and re-drill operation on those models anyway, so the new thimble holes can be drilled straight across.Tomcutting wrote:also with the current angles can you put a mastery bridge on or will it have issues lining up the intonation?
It looked REALLY weird thoughbacca51 wrote:A forum member on here recently posted one with a mastery and he said the intonation and function is all the same with the angled posts

Mastery has about three times the travel of the original ABR TOM bridge though ... there's more room to adjust.bacca51 wrote:A forum member on here recently posted one with a mastery and he said the intonation and function is all the same with the angled posts

Re: Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
It's common with the ABR-1 bridges. Not so much with the Nashville ones as the saddles have a bit more travel.

Re: Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
I ended up using this bridge on my purple mascis, because it has the ability to set its position using the allen bolts on either side of the bridge I was able to get the bridge straight and the saddles have plenty of room to move for intonation.

They're really something, aren't they? Photos do NOT do that model justice.Tomcutting wrote:It arrived today and looks beautiful btw

It is this one from GFS:Tomcutting wrote:what bridge is that salty?

It of course still has the radius mismatch that the guitars stock bridge has, but it does not seem to bother me any.

Re: Purple J Mascis bridge angle?
thanks salty,
I think i'm just going to play it for the moment, order some longwound strings from http://www.thegts.co/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and consider the next moves but first thoughts are staytrem arm and red tort scratch plate (it's come with a white one)
