Music Man Stingray HT - Anyone tried one?

Post by Nedavine » Wed May 15, 2024 3:35 am

I'm rather tempted as one is on sale very cheap near me but I've never played or owned a Music Man. I have two Jazzmasters (one classic spec one more modded) and a tele and thought this would be a nice addition giving me some humbucker flavor but there isn't really too much about the HT line up online.

There's also a Johnny Marr for similar price but as amazing as that guitar seems I figure I can get 80% of the way there with my to Jazzmasters.

Curious to hear peoples thoughts.

I don't have a lot of experience with MusicMan stuff, but I did own a Stingray Classic bass for a while, and the build quality of that thing was so great that I would buy any other MusicMan produce sight unseen and have nothing but confidence in getting a great guitar.

Thanks for the reply. This seems to be the consensus that the quality is really high.

Wish I could help more, but MusicMan seems to have rethought a lot of the way they make their guitars. The five or six screw necks, the compensated nuts, Schaller tuners on that HT, the well thought out heel adjust truss rod mechanism, they kind of quietly bump up the quality of all the components.

That Stingray bass has a super nice satin neck on there. It played effortlessly. I should get another.

I was lusting over the Brulee color that they had however I am not a fan of the black hardware. It would be cool to see these modded with some sort of tremolo.

They have them, this is a great price, but it's not the exact same HT model being discussed here.

If there’s a Johnny Marr jag for a similar price and you feel the need to buy one of them, I’d be buying the Marr for sure

I would also buy the Jaguar before the Music Man.

I don't feel that any guitar with two PAF type hum buckers is all that versatile, really, and honestly I would rather just buy a Les Paul Studio for $900 and be done with it rather than buy a $3000 MusicMan Stingray.

That's just me, though.

Yeah I guessed the Marr would be a safer choice. It’s gorgeous but given I have two jazzmaster feel like I wouldn’t be gaining much of a different sound.

I also love my American pro ii tele and so having something else with a hard tail and different sound felt like it would be a good call. To be honest I’m torn but that’s a lucky position to be in for sure hehe.

Jazzmasters don't sound like Jaguars.
"I don't know why we asked him to join the band 'cause the rest of us don't like country music all that much; we just like Graham Lee."

Fair point but they are in the same area of jangle and punch attack. At least to my ears anyway.

IMO the Marr is a bit of a different beast. No idea what makes the pickups different from a typical Jaguar’s but they’re definitely different and the switching makes them sound even more different.

I like how some of the MM stuff looks but haven’t been able to try a lot of them. I played that St Vincent sig with the rosewood neck and it was pretty sick though

I’d love to get the St Vincent but that thing is way out of price range here. Don’t know why it’s so much more.
