Olympic White, 3-ply Black pickguard, tinted gloss neck finish, Maple fingerboard and black block inlays
this would be my likely choice among the Tributes. though i already have BB&B on my USA Doheny... i would miss that binding.
i haven't played a Tribute in years. here's hoping these are fantastic quality! my MO regarding G&L's is to buy the Fullerton built guitars on the used market. one of the biggest bargains ever. but i actually feel that all the new Dohenys are more than worth the asking price. super happy with mine!

The Indonesian Tributes I've seen have had hit and miss fretwork, otherwise they're great. If you're buying sight unseen, make sure you get it from somewhere with a good return policy. That said, I've had three Tributes- two were only sold because I got crazy deals on USA models, and I'm keeping the third. All were great guitars, especially for how little you can buy them for if you're patient.
However, I've seen exactly two used USA Dohenys so far- one was a horrible color, the other was at damn near retail price. I have a feeling these won't be as plentiful on the secondhand market as Legacies and ASATs are.

...which would be awfully similar to an ASAT Special.

Which it isn’t. It’s a Doheny. Hence the name.

Other than body shape and the headstock decal, what's the difference?

The pickups are a different and new design, specific to the Doheny.
The pickup placement, switch/pot/jack placement, pickguard shape, headstock shape and block markers in the neck instead of dots are also different.
So apart from those minor details, the body shape and headstock decal, yeah... they're basically indistinguishable.

I've heard that, but I haven't seen anyone compare them side-by side, or explain what the differences are. On the surface they seem pretty similar.

So in other words, the major features of the guitars would be about the same. A Doheny is much more different from an S500 than a Doheny hardtail would be from an ASAT Special. And, taking the trem off a guitar is like taking the stereo out of a car- sure you can do it, but why?

I've been looking for a side by side Jumbo MFD and Doheny (Jazz) MFD pickups. Can't find anything.
I own guitars with Jumbos and played the Doheny, but I played it at a store on an amp I'm not used to, so it is still impossible to say.
As soon as I have a Doheny in hand, I'll do a video.

But it’s still a different instrument. Some of us prefer an offset shape. Hence this entire forum... in addition, I wish I absolutely despise vibrato systems. Be they a synchronized tremolo, Jazzmaster vibrato, Khaler, Bigsby or Floyd Rose. I prefer a hardtail, a six point hardtail specifically, over any sort of tremolo unit. I prefer the feel and the sound without it. So the Doheny is what I wanted a Jazzmaster to be for a long time.

I really like the look of these, but I think I'm going to save and go straight for the US model with one of the exclusive G&L finishes like Black
Burst, Blue Burst or Transparent Green.
The Tributes are much better than they used to be. I remember when they first came out and had those ugly plain black decals and really heavy bodies. Did they move production to a different factory or did they simply step up their game?
I played a SB-2 and an ASAT Classic recently from the newer tribute line and they were both great. The bass was even a comfortable weight.
Tribute production was originally in Korea. Now its Indonesia. I like the MIK stuff, more consistent quality, were cheaper and came with a gig bag

I prefer MIK also. Consistently good quality Guitars. I was starting to warm up to these Guitars but if these are made in Indonesia I pass. Too many bad experiences with Indonesian Guitars.
