Gah, I've just been lamenting how G&L doesn't offer standard sized MFD humbuckers. The buckers in my '80 F-100 are just awesome, and that's coming from someone who doesn't normally like humbuckers.

Wow - Another F100 owner? Don't come across us often. I love my '83 :) And the pickups are fucking amazing.

Yep, I got one this past summer because I went on a "post-Fender Fender" kick. Got myself a '77 Music Man Stingray guitar, and shortly followed it up with the '80 F-100 and an '86 SC-3.

The F-100 was a killer design, and its interesting to follow Leo's designs from Music Man to G&L. You can see why he made each change that he did, for better or for worse.

Funny, I have an '88 SC3 too:

I have a Doheny V12 and find it to be very versatile, though I am waiting for a hardtail version with the Saddle-Lock bridge to be offered. I think this video from G&L does a great job of showing the tonality of the pickups in series, single coil and parallel modes.

Awesome they're showing up in the wild :) If they were offered Saddle Lock right now it'd be almost automatic for me - I have a feeling the Custom Shop might hook you up though.

Oh- Wow. Nice G200 :) I understand the G200 is supposed to have somewhat hotter pickups than the F100 - I'm curious how they compare to the V12 humbuckers?

That guitar needs a reissue, btw.

Admittedly this is not an apples to apples comparison. The body woods are different and the G-200 has a shorter scale length.
The G-200 has two split coil sounds – single coil and single with bass boost. Both are formidable having full range and strong harmonics. I prefer the G-200’s split coil mode to the V12’s for the music I play (power pop, indie pop, classic rock). However, unlike the G-200, the V12 has more flexibility because each pickup is splittable. For example, with both pickups selected you can run the neck pickup in single coil mode while the bridge pickup is in series humbucking mode making for some interesting and useful tones (as illustrated in the G&L video I posted previously).

The V12’s humbucker tone in series mode is impressive. It is warm, harmonically rich, but not muddy. If you like PAF type humbuckers, you’ll like the V12 in series mode. G&L’s demo of this tone is spot on. The G-200 in humbucker mode (series) is hotter than the V12 and much brighter. More like a FilterTron than a PAF. I’m not gonna lie, but I prefer the G-200’s humbucker tone, but then I prefer FilterTrons to PAFs so you get the idea.

As a side note, like most G&Ls the V12 takes pedals really well. Another note – MFDs are sensitive to pickup height. I needed to raise the bridge pickup on the V12 about 2 millimeters to hit the “sweet spot” that I found most pleasing.

The V12 fits well in the pantheon of G&L MFD humbuckers and it sits on the warmer (not muddy!) side of the MFD spectrum. For single coil tone, the standard Doheny (or any ASAT with MFDs) would be my choice.

Cool - Thanks for the write-up. Sounds like they're all quite different sounds between the guitars, so that's a good thing :)

Great to get your thoughts on the G200 in particular; my F100 (with similar pickups that are I think a slightly different wind and 25.5" scale) sounds extremely heavy/hot/loud, with a lot of bass. Treble is there for sure, but I don't think I would describe it as 'bright' which some people experience of the F100 - could be the mahogany body in mine or differences in the later ('83) wiring and pickups. Agree with MFDs sitting best nearer the strings.

In addition to the different pickups, the F-100 circuit is different from the G-200's so there's that, too. Plus, I find that the F-100 pickups with slot head pole pieces sound a little different than the later ones with hex head pole pieces.
