Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
I go with mine since 6 years now with grungy sounds and never thought about changing anything. These guitars are great for these sounds!

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
I made two changes: a Staytrem bridge and an amber switch tip. Just because I like that color better. Other than that, it doesn't need anything changed - honestly, the Staytrem is only on my JMJM because... well, it looks better

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
I’ve got vintage spec wiring, SD Antiquity IIs, Fender tremolo unit, Staytrem arm and an amber switch tip on mine.
Bought second hand so all the extras and guitar totalled price of a new one. Genuinely one of the best Guitars I own, love it!

I was interested in this - how much of an issue having the two E strings raised slightly above the neck curve profile will be.higgsblossom wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 7:10 am- honestly, the Staytrem is only on my JMJM because... well, it looks better

Probably not much - I made a TLDR post at one point about it, but ideally you want a somewhat flatter radius bridge than the neck radius anyway. The Expanding Man wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 7:17 pmI was interested in this - how much of an issue having the two E strings raised slightly above the neck curve profile will be.higgsblossom wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 7:10 am- honestly, the Staytrem is only on my JMJM because... well, it looks better

I can’t answer most of your questions, but I do own a JMJM. I did replace the pups with AVRI ‘65 JM pups and all the switches and pots with vintage values. OMG this thing rocks!!!

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
A few years ago I originally set out to get a JMJM. I thought it looked cool & I liked the P90ish Pickups. But I couldn't find one I liked.
Instead I ended going through 3-4 VMJM's that all had more issues than I wanted to deal with so I returned them all.. ( I've had several other Guitars since & have forgotten the actual number).
Then I played an AV65 JM, that was so much like my friends original Vintage 60's JM that I wished I could've bought but it wasn't for sale, & I bought it. Love it & still have it...
Fast forward a year & a deal came up on JMJM's so I ordered one. Knowing at best I would be dealing with having to do a serious Set up & maybe adding a Shim..
The Set up required quite a bit of time to get it where I liked it.. I was planning on changing the Trem, Tuners, Nut & maybe some other stuff. I started playing it & it felt good & it played good. I liked it Stock just the way it is.
It isn't an AV65 but I'm not looking for it to be one as I already have one. This is a different Guitar & it has it's own cool Sound & it's a blast to play..
Probably the best JM in the Squier Line. At least IMO.....

Have you ever seen J Mascis' action height? My thoughts on this: if he doesn't care, I will simply have to get a tiny bit closer to his playing abilitys and I also won't care anymoreThe Expanding Man wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 7:17 pmI was interested in this - how much of an issue having the two E strings raised slightly above the neck curve profile will be.
Seriously, it's not a big deal and I simply liked the Staytrem on my Jaguar and wanted to have a somewhat similar look and feel.

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
Guitar has arrived today.
Seems it has a pickup or wiring fault.
The bridge pickup is almost inaudible. I don't think it is the switch, as I am getting some low level output when it is in the bridge position. I'm hoping it will be an easy fix, rather than sending it back.
Any ideas? I'm reasonably good with a soldering iron and have rewired strats and teles before.

I'd be wary of voiding warranty by un-soldering anything. In case it has to go back. You could take the pickguard off and look for anything obvious, eg broken connection.
With the pickup selector switch in the neck position (ie up), the bridge pickup should be out-of-circuit. So your meter should see just its resistance when the meter is across its connection to the selector switch and ground (eg rim of output jack). I don't know exactly what its DCR should be when healthy .. probably somewhere between 5 and 10 k.ohms. If it's not in that ballpark then the pickup may be shot.

Thanks timtam.
Looks like this is a 2012 model that has probably not been used and sat in storage - still has all the protective plastic and inspection labelling attached.

Maybe get a quote from a luthier or local setup person to get it looked at, and take that to the people who sold it - presumably better than the cost of return shipping, for them, and you get to keep the one you wanted.

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
I'm sure you've already given the 3 way switch a good work out as crud gets in them when they sit for long periods. And looked at the height adjustment of the Pickups...
I could see giving it a good inspection & see if it's something really simple that won't void the Warranty. If not I'd send it it back & get it replaced...

Re: Squier J Mascis JM Availability
This turned out to be the fault. After multiple switching, I eventually get a contact with the bridge pick up.
I'm also not too happy with the volume and tone pots - they seem to be either very quiet or very loud, with limited response between 3 and 7 on the dials.
I'm thinking of replacing all the electronics. I did this to a Squier Classic Vibe tele, and it was a good improvement. However, I ran into problems with the tele. The Stewmac rewiring kit had pots that were wider than the faceplate and knobs of the squier.
Has anybody rewired a JMJM? Were there any issues with the pots fitting the faceplate and knobs?
