You can see him bend up a little more than a step on the ~15th fret on the high E string and it chokes out. That's generally where the problem always happens, but I guess it could be mitigated with an expert setup to allow almost a step and a half.

Hmmmm that explains why I never had any problems with 7.25 radius LOL ... I don't think I've ever even been past 12th fret ever in my life or even had to bend that high

Do the MIM jazzmasters come with good shielding in the cavities and decent electronics, or is it just the spray on conductive paint like the japanese or squier ones?

It’s black shielding paint. I can’t think of any Fender guitars that come with copper tape. Having said that, I think shielding paint is fine in practice. The electronics in MIMs are usually a little higher end than MIJ/Squier.

Do people really think shielding paint is worse than copper tape? I'd have thought it the other way around since copper tape can come unstuck, etc.

So pretty much no matter what jazzmaster i buy, from squier up to american original '60s, i'd have to do some upgrading like faraday cage-ing to kill some buzz?

American Special Jazzmasters have hum-canceling pickups.

Yeah, I know that. Just curious which ones hum less 'out of the box'.

A Jazzmaster without hum? Buy an SG jnr or a noise gate?

Ha. That doesn't help when I'm trying to play/record mellow 'jazz' over a looping pedal.

Well, if your place is anything like mine, no amount of shielding is going to get rid of the hum. If you're interested, you can get a 3rd pickup for your Jazzmaster and use it as a dummy coil. Ideally you just buy the same pickup as your current bridge pickup (eBay, Reverb, etc), then put it in place of your current neck pickup. Now your two pickups have the same winding direction and magnet polarity. Next, wire the original neck pickup in series between your 3-way toggle switch and your volume pot (ground wire of the pickup goes to the hot wire lug of the switch, hot wire from pickup goes to the volume pot), and the hum will be cancelled in all positions without significantly affecting your tone. Just my 2 cents.

Note: this works better with a tele or strat pickup as the dummy coil in my experience, but I just recommended the most economical method.

Seen the IBM JM, haven't seen any pics or video of the OTM jag ... Maybe it's not come out of the factory yet?

I do. One of the best things about the Johnny Marr Jag is the neck. I much prefer them. Also, don't need to be doing much bending personally and certainly never above the 12th fret! yeeesh!

Just do one for vintage reissues, one for standards, one for premium standards, and then seasonal random mishmashes like they like to do so much. Maybe if a mishmash gets popular they can move it into standards.

Over here we know all the ins and outs of Jazzmasters and Jaguars because there aren't that many anyways, but if you're trying to figure out which Tele or which Jazz Bass to buy with no prior knowledge it gets really annoying.

They do things this way because they need new things to market every so often.
