NGD: Fender Player Jaguar, Tidepool
Well, I can finally take my full membership in the forum here. Bought my first offset today. Just want to thank everyone who posts to this forum because I’ve been reading regularly over the last few months as I honed in on the right model for me. I started out looking at Jazzmasters, and then shifted my attention to the Squier Classic Vibe line before finally going with the Fender Player. Since it’s my #2 guitar I didn’t want to go over $1000, so I’m glad I was able to find a model that suited me.
FWIW, here are my initial impressions. Might not mean much to offset veterans, but it might help people like me shopping for their first offset right now.
1) I like the 3-way pickup switch for ease of use and the coil split switch that references the style of switches found on classic Jags.
2) I know there’s less chrome on this model, but the design works for me.
3) This guitar wasn’t even on my radar initially because of the humbucker on the bridge. I just assumed it would be hot and designed for heavier music. I’m glad I gave it a chance, because I find whether it is split or fully engaged it gives me access to the surfy tones I was looking for. In some uses, it almost seems to act like a boost. Reading up on Alnico 3’s it makes sense that Fender chose this humbucker for the Jag. I know their marketing said something to the effect of modern approach with a classic voice, and I feel like they delivered on that promise.
4) Bridge works. Don’t think I’ll need to replace it.
5) 9.5 radius was essential for me. I just didn’t enjoy bends on the 7.5s I tried.
6) Body is heavy. Not a complaint. Just an observation.
7) Really like the satin neck. My other two guitars have glossy finishes, so this is a nice change of pace.
Didn’t find the fret edges rough as some complained.
9) Quality control not perfect necessarily. Some of the fret holes seemed to be cut deeper than the fret depth. But not a deal breaker for me at this price point. Overall, it was finished better than the Squier Classic Vibe I was comparing it too.
10) Neck pickup to my ear sounded similar to neck on Squier with rhythm switch activated. Seems like Fender really tried to cover the main tones of a Jaguar despite the different switch and pickup system. Others might not agree (and I didn’t compare with more expensive models), but it satisfies my needs.
Long post, not sure who will read the whole thing, but happy to be part of the offset club.

LOL, I didn't want to risk a photo post fail. Looks the same as every other Tidepool anyway.

Congrats! I have the tidepool HH player tele. It's easily one of my favorite guitars. It's crazy playable. Split and the buckers both are great tones. I might be on the lookout for that jag now.

Know what it looks like, have seen one in real life too, but I came here FOR PICS!
Got a Strat in tidepool, it's a fairly nice colour.

I'm clearly new to this New Guitar Day etiquette. Will these do?

Thanks for suggesting these. I'm a big fan of Seymour Duncan (have their P90s in my single cut) but I wasn't aware of the Stag Mag. I noticed on their website that they tout the Strat sound of the single coil when split. Do you find that too, or do they retain some Jaguar character? I ask because I really like the stock pickup--more than I was expecting to going in. It looks like the humbucker is pretty hot too. How do you find it in real world use.

I’m curious to try one of these. I really like humbuckers in a Jaguar (love the traditional pups as well).
The colour is great.
Good score!!

I polished the frets and oiled the fretboard yesterday so it has that fresh out of the box look now. Also put on a new set of Bullet 10s.
Only issue I'm having right now is intonating the low E string. All the others are fine. I've tried adjusting the screw, the saddle, and the bridge. No matter what I try, the 12th fret E stays sharp while the harmonic is in tune with the open E.

Sounds like you should replace the low E. Sometimes you get a dud string that won't intonate.Beltone wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 11:08 amThanks!BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 5:06 amI’m curious to try one of these. I really like humbuckers in a Jaguar (love the traditional pups as well).

I have no idea why or how, but it occasionally happens.

Thanks for the tip. I was concerned at first that the issue was the screw touching the string, but even after the string was sitting right in the barrel slot further adjustments led to the same thing.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 4:39 pmSounds like you should replace the low E.
