Try finding a Modern Player Jazzmaster. It has all the right apointments.

I wish the Squier Contemporary Jazzmaster in Graphite Metallic had a trem instead of a TOM stoptail. It would be a great color for a Jazzblaster.

I was going to suggest the JMJM but see you already made that choice..

Of the modest priced Squier JM's it's the best built, sounding & with a good Setup is a very good Player...

I had no luck with VMJM's (many do though) but I am very pleased with my JMJM.

The player ones are nice but I think it’d need a tort guard and covered pickups, although the stock ones are alright. I’m not sure about the colours they come in though although I think Lee Ranaldo’s jazzmaster looks more Olympic white than cream and that’s why I’m looking at the Vintera. I wish they made them in the red colour like the one in my profile.
I don't know if you already pulled the trigger, but if you want a J Mascis JM in Red, it's called the Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster TR. It is the exact same guitar but in Candy Apple Red without the signature on the back of the headstock. They aren't being made anymore (as of last year), but there are still quite a few left out there. On a positive note, they all have rosewood boards, so you don't have to worry about getting one with a pale Indian Laurel board (the JMJM switched to Laurel late last year).

Sorry for reposting this picture, but just so you have an idea of what it looks like without the gold anodized guard:
