Getting a guitar signed.

Post by SonicC » Tue Oct 01, 2019 11:55 am

Thurston Moore (I’m sure we all know who that is here) is coming to monorail in Glasgow in October 15 and I’m thinking of taking my squier jag to get signed on the back of the headstock. Is there a pen type that’ll be permanent on a Poly finished guitar? Or will I have to sand off the original finish then refinish over the signature?

Thanks

If I were you I would def sand it off and refinish afterwards to make sure that thing stays there!

Do you have to completely sand off the original finish? Couldn't you scuff it with some 240 or so and just spray over it? Especially since it's the back of the headstock.

I'd definitely test out how your marker does against the specific can of poly you're going to use beforehand, though.

Pro tip, get a picture of him signing it so there's provenance. Him signing and him with you and the guitar. Even if you plan to never sell it doesn't matter. Guitars can outlive us, and those taking care of your shit afterwards will greatly appreciate it. Good luck!
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

If I was Thurston Moore, wanting to take provenance photos of me signing the guitar would put me right off signing it. Makes it about the value rather than recognising a fan.

Well, you don't have to make it conspicuous. Just have a friend take a few while its happening.
Either way, good luck and enjoy the show!
