Johnny Marr Jaguar - Preferred String Gauge?

Post by jaypno » Wed Jun 24, 2020 7:21 am

Hey guys, long-time member of TGP (josephpnorman) but just joined OSG. I just picked up a Johnny Marr Jaguar in Lake Placid Blue, as well as a Mastery M-1 bridge. I'm planning on doing a set-up tonight, but am wondering what gauge strings you all like on the JM Jag? I'm thinking about setting it up with .10 or .11 flatwounds. Thank you!

I believe fender ships it with flatwound 10’s.
I just got my first jag which is the Marr and surfysonic has it set with 11’s. The feel is a bit different but the tone is incredible, blows my mind.

I like 11s myself. I recently tried a couple of sets of 12s (out of curiosity mostly) and preferred the 11s.

11s for me.

I’m sure about that as I’ve actually got 10s on mine right now and it’s not good - buzzy and rattly. I got a Vintera Mustang recently (same 24” scale) and found I really like 10s on that, so I thought I’d see how the Jag goes with them. Poorly, was the answer, for me at least.

I’ve new sets of 11s on order And as soon as they get here, the 10s are coming off.

Mustangs work better with 10s than Jaguars, because the break angle behind the bridge is far more than on a Jaguar. 11s are unnecessary on Mustangs, unless you like a tighter feel and a much tighter vibrato.

I also love 11s on Jaguars.

He recommends roundwound 11s for it, says that what it was designed to work best with:

Mine came (new) with roundwounds on (10-46 I think) and a set of flatwounds in the case. I bought it 5 years or so back though so they may have changed since then.

Welcome
I have 11s on mine.
You might want to give the stick bridge a shot. There were issues with the string spacing on earlier years but they got the width right by the time the LPB came out.
Worst case: you’ll have a good “before” sound for when you do install the Mastery.
You can also switch bridges without restringing, if needed. (A bit of a hassle though, and it may be tougher with a mastery)

??? Use the strings that you prefer.

What anyone else prefers should have absolutely no bearing on this.

10-46 Daddarrio’s on mine, anything heavier makes bends a lot tougher for me. No issues, sounds and plays great.

There's nothing different about the Marr compared to any other jag as far as string physics are concerned (except that the stock Mustang-style bridge has fewer places to rattle, but yours has a Mastery). The 24" scale obviously means lower string tension than 25.5" for the same tuning and gauge. So going down in gauge gets you into the potentially problematic range for lack of sting-saddle downforce earlier (eg bridge rattles, bridge not rocking back to neutral after trem use). Since you have a Mastery the rocking issue doesn't apply. A common rule of thumb for similar playing feel is one gauge higher on a 24" than a 25.5", eg 11's instead of 10's. If you really want 10s, the non-rocking Mastery is probably a little more accommodating - it actually likes lower downforce and string-saddle friction. But if it's still problematic, you can keep downforce up in other ways, ie by getting a greater string break angle, eg taking the bridge higher with a bigger neck shim angle. But there's a point at which too much string-saddle friction can cause the Mastery to move with trem use, which can create odd noises.
