NGD - Fender Modern Player Mustang

Post by Surfysonic » Sat Jul 04, 2020 11:20 am

I was GASsing for one of these when they first came out and soon after they became available, I bought one. I liked the stock MP-90s and it was a solid guitar. A year or so after buying it, I loaned it out to a friend's son who's a gigging guitarist. Regretfully, he returned the guitar to me with some serious damage to the body. It was so bad I just told him to keep it. Here's the old one I had:

I never thought to look for another. Currently, I'm in the process of putting together a partsbuild Mustang and I bought this Fender Modern Player Mustang to scavenge parts from it (pickups, neck, bridge, etc.). More on the partsbuild Mustang here:

When the Fender Modern Player arrived, I was blown away by how beautiful the dark tint and grain was on the neck. I then plugged it in and that great old tone that had me fall in love with this guitar years ago was there. I decided this guitar shouldn't be used for parts. I'm a sucker for the Daphne Blue wash finish, too.

Of course, I can't leave well enough alone, so I made some slight aesthetic mods to my new Modern Player Mustang. The guitar came with a Warmoth Modified Mustang bridge - I've got a drawer full of these that I had replaced with StayTrem bridges because I don't get on with the height adjustments on each saddle as they tend to unscrew upwards and poke my right-hand palm.

Since StayTrems are hard to come by here in the US during the pandemic, I bought a black Steel Mustang 9.5" bridge that works really well and is less expensive than a Mastery or StayTrem (although I'm still a fan of both).

Sorry for the slightly out of focus shots - I had lasik eye surgery years ago and had to give up my nearsightedness for the farsight. I use reading glasses but they seem to not always align with the camera focus when I think I'm in focus and I do my best to keep steady hands for the camera shots:

I've tried one of those, it's a hella underrated guitar!

I'm curious about the Mustang bridge, though, where'd you get that?

I'm envious of your Epi Sorrento.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

Nice collection of guitars there! I was looking at a Duo Sonic a while back. I need a short scale for the collection!

Definitely - stays in tune very well, too. 8)

The bridge brand name is actually "Steel Mustang". Allsound Store sells them on Reverb for $21.95 + $3 Shipping. I believe they come in chrome, black and gold. At the time I needed the bridge for my parts build, only the black was available. Then I bought adamrobertt's Mastery to use on the parts build Mustang. Turns out the black bridge was perfect for this Mustang. :)

That's my Gibson ES-135 with double-stacked P100 pickups. I just put up a really long post about it in the Non-offset guitar talk section - http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... 9&t=116455. 8)

Thanks! Can't go wrong with Duo Sonics, Mustangs, Jaguars - so many variations out there! 8)
