At first I was so angry to see this, I felt so guilty that I hadn't noticed before. Like a few of you, I thought I could just swap out the control plate and that would be find. But I fell into a depressive slump, knowing deep down that my Mustang was tainted.

These feelings have passed now, and I've come to accept that my potentially wonky Mustang control plate doesn't bother me at all. It was a hell of a ride though.

You'll be much stronger now you've come through that. It's CROSS_guitars I'm worried about now, he seems to have taken it rather badly.

seems like the american performer mustang is less wonky - no?

I really want one of these - but now?

The control plates on the American performers are the correct design.
OK - great - thanks for the confirmation CROSS - cheers!

I noticed it on my Vintera. I suspect that Fender does stuff like this on purpose to thwart counterfeiters.

I doubt it. These wonky control plates are available everywhere now. It's hard to find the correct ones.

It amuses me that people are complaining about very minor misalignment on Mustang control plates when the Jag-stang one is just slapped on close enough that it's just about in the right postcode.

I think the Jag-stang design has had its fair share of complaints.

Exactly :) Counterfeiters of U.S. made and vintage models I meant.

Funny you mention that. I bought a Jag-Stang back in 1996 and quickly regretted not getting a 69RI mustang instead. The poorly aligned control plate, pickguard, and thick slab body were the main reasons.

Now, the slab body and odd shape of the Vintera plate kind of remind me of playing the Jag-Stang. Good times .

I actually think the extra curve or whatever on the Vintera plate looks a little better.

You think Mustangs and Jag-stangs are bad?

I haven't noticed the curve along the body until now, but I have noticed how the plate overhangs the pickguard. I first noticed it with a Faction Guitars control plate on a Warmoth body with a Warmoth pickguard. Initially I thought I had an incompatibility because Warmoth says their pick guards only work on their bodies. I thought it was maybe the same for control plates. But then I noticed a decent amount of overhang on the Ben Gibbard Mustang (not as much as mine though), so I decided to be fine with it. I think the curve of the plate follows the body shape ok, but not perfectly. Here's mine:

That's the correct control plate, at least. It's the pickguard that is a bit off.
