I guess this is the complete opposite extreme of me...I've always been happy with the stock bridge, 10-52 strings and 40-year old pickups, whereas he likes a humbucker on the bridge, a mustang bridge and the strings wrapped around a buzz stop.

different strokes an' all that, I guess :)

I love the stock bridge on mine also.  I have great sustain on mine with 11-50 D'Addario Chromes.  Some of that may be attributable to the tightest neck pocket on a Fender I have ever seen

Why would you wrap your strings arround a buzz stop? Does this generate more sustain? And if so, why? I mean, the idea behind the buzz stop is that you increase the angle that the strings make with the bridge right? To prevent the whole typical jazzmaster/jaguar buzz. I can understand how this results in more force directed downwards on the bridge and thus, hopefully more sustain. But what does wrapping your strings arround the buzz stop add?

just wondering ;)

Sustain for TWO WEEKS!!!  ::)  It seems like the trem wouldn't work as well with them wrapped around like that. It would probably cause quite a bit of friction and bind the strings too much. If I felt like I needed to drastically improve the sustain of a JM, I would probably just get something else. But that's just me.

Yep .. so are the rest of us! I can't imagine it would improve sustain, although it might take two weeks to get a whole tone bend out of the trem.

Exactly .. or at least a Jag HH .. humbuckers and tune-o-matic as standard.

ah well, I see that I'm not the only one wondering about this. But honestly, why do you want to have sustain for 2 weeks? I mean, I think my jazzmaster has enough sustain anyway. Why should one want more?

couldn´t agree more. the trem must be unusable that way, so a HH jag would both look and perform better.

I can understand the silliness about the wrapping the strings around the buzz stop.  That's a definite head-scratcher, for sure...

...but why the comments about the humbucker?  Didn't Sonic Youth throw humbuckers into tons of Jaguars/Jazzmasters?

It just seems like a double standard, that's all.

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who has neither humbuckers nor a buzz stop attached to his Jaguar.

I think that adding a humbucker while going for a buzz stop, a mustang bridge etc etc basically shows someone who wants an offset-shaped Les Paul or something, that's all.

as far as the Sonic Youth guitars go, the only ones of theirs I like that sport humbuckers, are the ones that have the Wide Range ones on...because the particular pups have a sound of their own....
