OK, here's the info on my Phil Manning guitar, for windmill and anyone else who's interested..

The Maton Phil Manning 'Custom Stereo' has two outputs (hence the 'stereo' bit) but it doesn't split the pickups to separate outputs
- it's just doubled, for two amps. The three way toggle switch selects between either or both outputs.

Image
The bottom controls work pretty much like a Les Paul (vol+tone for each pickup) plus a master volume control.
Image
At the top there's a three way pickup selector, but also a three position rotary switch which, on my guitar, selects
between series / parallel / split humbucker operations, and switches both pickups from the one selector.

The original function of this rotary switch was slightly different. It provided a bass boost function, maybe more like a Gretsch.
And the original design had phase and pickup splitting switches on the pickup surrounds themselves.

I emailed Phil Manning once and he said he still has his original Maton PM Custom model guitar, but that he'd had it painted red and put P90 pickups in it at some stage. Mine has the original pickups installed, which I think are actually made with magnetic pole pieces perhaps. If anyone knows how these pickups were actually constructed, I'm keen to know!

'tis a pleasure to share!

I'm actually thinking of selling this one in the next month or so, as I'm going overseas for a few months and no job at the moment!
But I regretted the last time I sold one (the one I owned as a teenager) hence why I bought this one again!

I had serial number 004 in the late 90's (it was my first serious guitar) and this one is serial number 005! (purchased in 2007 or so)

My friend had one of these guitars, and his had the switches on the pickup surrounds, and the body had a slightly darker looking finish. Was quite a nice guitar to play.

Just wondering - is yours heavy? I mean, seriously, way-heavier-then-even-the-heaviest-Les-Paul type heavy?

Yeh, the Maton Phil Manning Custom guitars were available in two different timbers, I think - the lighter one (like mine) or quite a dark reddish wood.
Mine is probably about the same weight as an average Les Paul, I guess.
Oh, and there was another more basic version called the ''Standard'' (as opposed to the ''Custom Stereo'' deluxe version) with a thinner (unbound) body and regular single output jack. I think the stereo version (with chambered body) has a particularly chunky & solid feel to it, and extremely well made.

The first Phil Manning guitar I owned (serial 004) ended up with a fellow up there in Brisbane called Roland Bisshop (if I recall correctly). I tracked him down some years ago as being the person who'd bought my old guitar, and I went to the Troubadour and checked out his band one night and heard the sounds of my old favourite guitar onece again! I can't remember the name of his band now, but I believe he was also in a band called Standing 8 Counts at one stage, and others called Turtlebox and International Rescue. I'm not sure what's become of him now.
