A couple more to add from NZ early '60s: Jansen Jazzman (posted a pic of this before in the "What's On Your Workbench?" thread-still not finished  )

Man, they went all out on that commodore - "We'll give you 4 of the pointiest knobs you've ever seen, floating on an ocean of chrome hardware! And 33% more fret markers than the competition!" TOTALLY AWESOME!

Glad you like it! Yeah, there's not much info online about them- they were made here in New Zealand, this model would be early '60s. I don't know how many were made, I've only ever seen maybe 4 or 5 of this model. There's some other cool models as well, all hard to find. I have another 6-string quite different to this (not offset or I would have posted it here), a bass, and a very cool lap steel. I've seen another 6-string with staggered split coil pickups with stereo switching. (All this was pre '66, the last year they were made.) The trem on mine has adjustable action for each string, so the amount of effect on any string can be wound down to zero. The guy who sold the guitar to me told me the trem was useless, but it turned out that it was just a matter of turning a few screws, and it was back in action. This guitar is still original, except for the chickenhead knobs- the originals were in the same colour sequence, but one was missing and I never could find a replacement- and the back, which is my avatar pic. Originally it had red sprayed-on velvet (flock?) which was worn out and badly re-covered with vinyl, so I did the leather back, keeping the black/ cream thing happening. I'd like to think the guy who made it would approve! 8)

For those interested in guitars that qualify for the list of offset guitars and the criteria for inclusion (it's not hard :) ), go to:

Board Index, then to

Questions & Comments, then got to

Criteria for Offsest

The more I look at this the more I lust after it. It's perfect - I prefer that headstock to a Fender, and I love the garagey 60s appointments. I assume that's some sort of clear plexiglass sheet over the top of the guitar and headstock? The only thing I might change would be the color. How is that vibrato on it?
