'Official' list of offset guitars and basses

Post by kreuzberg » Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:06 am

My apologies if the topic has been addressed before, I have not been able to find it.

Is there an 'exhaustive' list of offsets ? OK, JM, Jag, VI, XII and...?

I haven't seen a list ..

I always think of those as the "big four" as they are old designs that seem to be based directly on the original patent drawing of the offset body. I guess the Jazz bass qualifies in that regard as well.

There are plenty of others though, some obvious and some not so obvious depending on how strictly you want to draw lines across them. Just off the top of my head:

Other Fenders: later model Mustangs/etc., Starcasters, Jagmasters, Jagstangs.
Old non-Fenders: some models of Framus, Eko, Maton, Hofner, Vox etc. .. not forgetting the Serviceman's guitars either!
New non-Fenders: Reverends (the old US shape and some of the MIK), Dipinto Galaxie

If you want to start up and maintain a list of offsets, you could make a good start by reading through the back threads here I guess. Good luck!

Yeah, I may try and make a list.

Is the Squier Venus considered an offset ?

I'm guessing we're not just counting GUITAR guitars, but I mean, there is one offset instrument that is more popular than all of those and it would be the JAZZ BASS!

There are tones of Offset Fenders out there. Perhaps we should have a list of only Fender Offsets and then a list of Non-Fender Offsets so as to avoid confusion.

Another old thread resurrected!

Post by Stereordinary » Mon Mar 17, 2008 9:28 am

Recently I realized that I am closing in on a very well-rounded offset collection.  It got me thinking that maybe I would try to slowly accumulate (at least) one of each of every offset Fender ever made, and maybe a few NFOs.  So I decided to go back and find the definitive list, but boy oh boy it sure sucks!  Seriously, were we all just asleep that day, this thread has four replies and none of them have anything resembling a list!  O.k., so here it goes:

Fender Offsets

1.  Jazzmaster
2.  Jaguar
3.  Bass VI
4.  Electric XII
5.  Duo-Sonic
6.  Music Master
7.  Mustang
8.  Starcaster
9.  Duo-Sonic II
10.  Music Master II
11.  Toronado

Non-Fender Offsets

1.  Ibanez Talman
2.  Framus Strato 6
3.  Teisco TB-64
4.  (Duh, I'm asleep right now)

Now copy the list into your reply and add to it!  >:(

As far as I can tell, the 1st generation student models aren't offset...pretty symmetrical waist.

I have a feeling some other distinction needs to be made. Fender offsets come in two flavours, the classic one with the offset waist & butt, and the student one with just the offset waist and straight butt. My attempt:

Fender

Classic Offset

- Jazzmaster
- Jaguar (all versions including baritones)
- Electric XII
- Custom/Maverick
(-Marauder, all versions)
- Starcaster
- Jag-Stang
-Jazz Bass
(- Jazzmaster Bass. Yeah, I know, there's only three or so of them)
- Bass VI
- Performer
(- Is there a performer bass?)

Student Offset

- Mustang
- Duo-Sonic II
- Musicmaster II, Music Master
- Bronco
- Musicmaster Bass
- Mustang Bass

Squier
- Jagmaster
- That upside down jazzmaster one

Non-Fender
Pretty much everything Italian, German, Japanese, Dutch, Yugoslavian, Czechoslovakian, Russian from the early '60s through the mid '70s.

???

I'm confused here...should we continue with the "copy the old list and add you contribution" or...

It might be better to copy and add, even with a modified structure.

Correct me if I'm wrong: this Rondo doesn't have an offset waist.  It has an asymmetrical body, but, much like a Gibson Firebird, it's not a true offset guitar by the def'n of this forum.  :(

I may be wrong, but it looks like offset-waist to me.  :-\
