Mascis Squier Jazzmaster Modding
I thought I would post a few things I came across when modding my jazzmaster.
--as a lot of people mentioned, an AVRI guard [edit - it was actually a fender aftermarket "reissue" pickguard, whether or not that's an AVRI I don't know] fits fine. Screw holes don't line up exactly but you can screw it in as-is and a few of the screws will be mostly un-noticeably at an angle. Another issue though is that (for me at least) the guard doesn't cover the entire route, there's a tiny sliver of cavity showing at the rhythm circuit. Also the shielding paint is somewhat slathered on it was showing also so I had to sand off the finish a bit near the upper pickguard horn.
--avri or CIJ jazzmaster bridges both work fine, especially with the increased break angle. The only issue is that they aren't tall enough, so you'll need to stick something in the hole to rest it on. I'm not sure of the thread size (anyone?) and I couldn't find a grub screw, so I bought a steel 1/4 inch diameter "tension pin" at the hardware store and cut it to size with a hacksaw.
--you might need some extra padding when changing the pickups, the originals have a metal plate underneath....the foam works fine on that but I had a hard time when trying to install vintage style pickups until I added some spare foarm in there.
--Pickup wizards sound great! THey have a lot of what I liked about the original but sound a bit more 3 dimensional.. I have to play them some more to see if/how much better they really are.
Update - trem was clicking so I replaced it with what I found out was a CIJ trem. Works better than the original and is a direct fit.

Sounds good Tantamo. The new pickups definitely have more of a twang to them and stand out more than the originals. I liked hearing the before and after in your vids. Nice playing too!
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe

Re: Mascis Squier Jazzmaster Modding
I have just watched the vids and as much as I like the clarity of the new pickups, i prefer the warmth of the originals. just my opinion

I can definitely see that...I wouldn't say the newer are really "better" just a different sound. I think the originals sounded good but they had a midrangey sound that I didn't always like. I did like the overall warmth. The rhythm circuit is actually useful with the new pickups though and I can get a lot of the warmth back that way (it was almost unusable with the stock pickups).

Wow! That's quite the improvement, sound and looks wise. Funny though, white with gold guard used to be my favourite

Looks great. Are you going to replace the trem as well?

Great job!
I was wondering which parts were compatible, so thanks for sharing the fruits of your exploration.
It makes this an even more attractive option

Re: Mascis Squier Jazzmaster Modding
Slightly OT I guess, but has it been mentioned yet if there's a TOM roller bridge that fits the J?
