It's a tad darker than alder, but to my ears they aren't that drastically different - and certainly not far enough off to not buy a guitar made of basswood.

And aside from that, a large majority of the CIJ Jaguars, Jazzmasters, and Mustangs are basswood.
I dont know about large majority, mustangs sure, but CIJ's have been alder since the late 90's with the exception of the original j mascis

My Squier Strat from '99 is Basswood and easily dents, but my MIJ CAR Jazzy is alder and has held up fine thus far.
So I emailed Fender after this post originally went up but didn't hear back til a few days ago, after it was cleared up that this is indeed legit, but the guy did mention they will be released in July. I can't wait to check these things out!

Why am I so excited at the thought of a Squier branded WRHB
I know, right? Imagine if they actually sound good and you put one in your new Squier Jazzmaster.

It'd be an all-Squier Jazzblaster
And that, truly, would be the epitome of cool, somehow.

EDIT: And what if, just what if, this Squier branded WRHB would also be Duncan Designed?
It won't be the first though. Back in 83, Squier did a SQ series Tele Custom with a WRHB for Japan only. They pop up on Ebay from time to time, and I snagged one, and it is a strange beast. It is after the real WRHB, but before any other Japanese RI WRHB. The construction is much more like the originals, and it sounds much more like them. Note the lack of Fender branding on the cover...

Snap! By some margin my favourite guitar (although I have a MIJ Fender Tele 52 which is superior in some aspects):

I can shed some light on the pickup - in the 70s and 80s the Fujigen factory was making Tele Custom, Deluxe and Thinline copies under the Greco name, all of which had "offset" humbuckers looking like WRHBs. These Squier ones (and the MIJ Fender branded version which also came out in 1983) are "standard" humbuckers with bar magnets under the bottom cover plate. The adjustment screws are steel, not magnetic CuNiFe as in the true WRHBs. They can be made to sound pretty good, the neck pickup in my Squier is excellent - I backed the screws on the back away from the strings to clear up the sound a touch.
Incidentally yours is from the second series of the SQ Tele Customs - the first series had slotted tuners.

I just heard back from fender, they said that they're producing it with limited color options and right handed models, and will expand to lefty if they're popular. It also seems to imply new colors might happen if a lot of these sell. So everyone buy one, you're helping the offset community.

The MSRP is 499, so they will be around 300 street price.

I've got both Squier Mascis Jazzmaster and the current version of the vintage modified Jazzmaster and I would say they are of equal quality. Great guitars!

I hope the necks are less clubby than the JMJM neck.

I only speak from experience. I own one. 8)
