I finally received my amp this afternoon back from its tune up (it sounds amazing), and I could plug the JM with the gold guard and test it.
First impressions: the tone with the gold guard is in fact brighter than with the tortoise, but the difference is very slight and subtle. More importantly, the difference in shielding is astounding! All the hums and hisses are gone...
But, I had decided on tortoise, so tortoise it is! In fact, it's already back on my guitar... The japanese gold guard is nice, but it does feel clinky and thin.. In the end, I prefer the look and the more solid feel of the tort plate.
Now if I could just find a way to get rid of those hisses...
