Best Replacement Jazzmaster Pickups

Post by Stereordinary » Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:06 pm

So you wanted a Jazzmaster for as long as you've been into guitar.  You got on eBay and read everyone saying that the Japanese re-issues were every bit as well-made as a real vintage Jazzmaster.  Then you joined the FDP and started talking to some old-time Jazzmaster-heads.  Then you wised up and joined OffsetGuitars.com ( ;)).  You read everyone saying that the Japanese pickups are crap and now you want new ones!  So, what should I... I mean you, get?

My take .. and I'm not going to actually vote because I've never used any of these pickups .. is that any of them will be an improvement over the standard CIJ pups. For a start, they are actual JM pups, which CIJ pups aren't.

At some point in the future I'll be putting together a JM from aftermarket parts .. I'll probably use Lollar or Novak.

None of those as far as I know.

I've got a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II model in my Jag's neck and it beats the SJAG2 in by bridge hands down.  Best pickup I've ever played, but they're hard to come by because I think they were a limited run and they're expensive.

I'm super happy with my Lollar neck in my '66.  I like the SD Antiquity II as well, but they are wound opposite from other pickups so you have to get them in pairs - they won't be proper hum cancelling if paired with stock or other normally wound PU's

Well, I'll say this- I love the pickups in my AVRI Jazzmaster and I love the Lollars in my Tele thinline and suspect that Jason's JM PUPs would be just as sweet as the Charlie Christian and Tele PUPs in my thinline, so I reckon that either will bring tone Nirvana to a Jazzmaster seeker.

you forgot to include Seymour Duncan "Vintage". those are the ones i´m using, and i´m really happy with them. so happy that i see no reason to ever change them for something else.

Are the seymour duncan vintage pickups any good for distortion?

Okay, I'm ina similar boat, and I'm looking for the most bass/low mids on the neck PU and a "mellower" bridge, and I'm looking at the seymour duncans.  I want my clean extra sparkly clean, cause i have pedlas for distortion, so the "hot" option sets me off a bit....
I prefer their older stuff.

I have a pair of Lollars in my CIJ Jazzmaster, and a pair of Novaks in my Tele. I don't have an idea which one of the two makes better JM-pups. But I played an AVRI Jazzmaster in a shop (the shop where Vinkie works, in Amsterdam) this weekend and it sounds quite thin compared to my Jazzmaster.
I was also able to compare my Jazzmaster to an original pre-CBS Jazzmaster and the bridge pickups where almost exactly the same, in fact, I couldn't hear any difference. The neck pickup on my Jazzmaster sounded punchier than the old pickup which sounded 'rounder' (don't know how to describe it in english) but I think this might be caused by the difference in age between the two pickups.

i must say, the one jm that i have put avri pickups in does seem quite bright and i find myself actually turning down the tone knob to nearly half way  :o .
mind you - the extra "bite" can come in useful sometimes.
does anyone else have the same experience with avri jazzmaster pickups?

i don´t feel qualified to vote on this, since i´ve only tried three of the options, i just know that AVRIs and QPs aren´t the ones i like the best.

I don't know about the Jazzmaster, but the AVRI Jag pickups have a lot of piercing treble, more than my Tele I think. It might be a bit too much.
