Gibson Mustang Copy

Post by Naturality » Sat Nov 04, 2006 6:36 am

I''ve been reading up on these Gibson Kalamazoo's, they are almost exactly like Mustangs, but are Gibson made, here's an ebay auction for one http://cgi.ebay.com/1957-GIBSON-KALAMAZ ... dZViewItem

Aren't the bodies on those Kalamazoos supposed to be made out of something horrible, like chipboard or something?

one of my friends had one of those a few years back. although the body was very thin it was insanely heavy, which was why he eventually sold it. he got very nice sounds out of it though.

Yes... presswood, particle board... whatever you want to call it. It's worse than plywood.

I had the bass version of one of these once. The pickup was the same as the Gibby EB-O...

The guitars (in stock form) had Melody Maker electronics.

I didn't know wtf you were talking about, then I looked at that auction. No way that thing was made in '57. It would be much closer to '67. The pots are the only way to tell.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing, but then I saw the auction and I was confused...

yep. definitely late 60s.  Gibson didnt even have that type pf pickup  yet in the 50s.

The necks are great on those, as good as a mustang for sure, but the bodies are masonite:(

oh, theyre pretty good at assing things up;)

I forgot to mention in my previous post, the things actually sound pretty nice, if you can abide playing a hunk of glue-wood.

I'm still amazed nobody has complained about the Washburn Wonderbar on the white one yet, lol.

THose guitars were not availible till the late 60's according to all the books I've read on guitars.  They are a blatant rip-off of the Fender Mustang, how Fender never sued them for them is anybody's guess, heck, the body shape is pretty darned close.  And yes, they are made of "chipboard".  I've played some cheap woods before (Masonite Danelectros, and Pressure Treated Pine, Southern Yellow Pine, Construction Grade Plywood homebrews), but I've NEVER played a chipboard guitar before.

on ebay I've found one with an SG styke shaped body..I don' care about the wood this are cool cheap guitars..maybe with interesting sound too...and of course they're not strat copy..
However..the neck is 3/4 like on mustangs? and the freatboard radius?
