Noiseless P-90 Replacement Suggestions

Post by stevejamsecono » Sun Sep 16, 2018 1:19 pm

Hey Folks,

So I picked up a Gibson Faded DC Special over the weekend. It plays great and has an incredible neck on it, but the pickups seem kind of... muddy and dead sounding? I'm not really into how they sound. I also forgot how noisy P-90s were after being used to hum-buckers for awhile.

SO I want to give something noiseless a shot since the guitar is otherwise excellent, and am looking for suggestions. As far as I can tell the options seem to be MiniHumbuckers (obviously would solve the brightness issue, but would they have enough body in a slabboard?), Soapbar Sized Humbuckers (Dimarzio and GFS come to mind, but there must be others), or FIltertrons.

I dunno what do we think?

Fralin humcanceling p-90s, if you're willing to shell out the money. Hard to find anything better than that!

I too have a Gibson Faded DC Special, bought it used and it came with a Duncan Stacked P90 - a humbucker really, and I like the way it sounds. Dead quiet, brighter and crisper than a typical humbucker, very balanced. I think they're sleepers in the noiseless P90 pool.

My favorites so far in my SG Classic are Seymour Duncan Vintage 90’s. They are absolutely fantastic!

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! People getting me on SD stuff eventually led me to this video and I think we have our winner:
